I have purchased an old (10 years at a guess) but new(unused) satellite set up which includes a strong sat receiver SRT 4564x it has no card in it. I’m a virgin as far as satellite tv goes my question is do I need to purchase a card to get free to air tv or is it possible without the outlay. I’m told I will have to get a vast receiver with a card to make it work. Is this my only option.
Many thanks in advance for all the advice.
Carl

If you want to watch the Free to Air (FTA) channels (ie normal channels you get at home) then you will indeed have to get a VAST receiver with a card. Cards are 'married' to individual receivers.

To the best of my knowledge, Strong do not make a box for the Vaste system, in other words, the box you have is obsolete.

Hi,
All your questions answered here
www.mysattv.com.au
And an excerpt from that site....
"Anyone wishing to access VAST will need to purchase a VAST approved satellite set-top box and a satellite dish of at least 65cm diameter. Access to this new satellite service is managed by a smart card which is supplied with the satellite set top box."
So I'd be going back to the joker that sold you the 'box' and asking for the 'card'.
Strong do make VAST box's....I believe!

Hi. This is the mob I got mine from (5yrs ago). they were very good & explained everything. (wouldn't let us leave until we had mastered the set up.) Mine has worked faultlessly everywhere. What I really recommend is a device they call " a marriage saver ." (sat finder device) Vast satelite kits from Access Tv.

Might be an outdated system now but nine years ago the CEO and I did a 20 week outback trip and only failed to have tv for 7 nights (133 nights out of 140 ) , finding the satellite was just a matter of turning the volume up on the required channel then adjusting the dish until the program was heard. Far easier and cheaper than a "sat finder meter" as you will still have to adjust the dish until the meter reads correct.
Try it before you buy a meter.

Just saying,

Scrubby.

Ok and many thanks to you all for the advice and input. So I’m gonna make the assumption that this strong is not any good to receive any signal and especially as it doesn’t have any card with it. I thought it might be possible to install an Optus Aurora card but I think I might just save my money and go vast to negate any potential pitfalls or hiccups.

Hmm sounds like the goods pity I’m on the other side of the country and auspost aren’t exactly that credible with the care taken with packages.
But many thanks for the offer.
