Touring vehicle

Mitchell N1

In the market for a 4x4 for general and remote camping and long range touring, around 20k. Looking for all opinions on landcruiser single cabs and extra cab hilux/ranger/dmax. Will be putting a canopy set up on the back with dog cages. Occasional towing. Any opinions appreciated.

Seriously - if you can find a low km 2009-2011 Colorado diesel, I don't reckon you can beat them for a robust 4WD ute. They will do 500,000kms and give little trouble.

They are both 2wd I think.

Love the idea of the 650. I think we must both be old head turners from a long way back. Reckon it might like a drink but ohhhhhhh the grunt !!

I like the Isuzu and the Colorado (in 4wd versions) too.

it's interesting the Ford 650 advertisement, they only show you the black one, what colour is the other one! :) Michael

Kenell - Yes, sorry, the F650 is only 2WD. I drive past it, in that yard, every day, and for some reason, I thought it was 4WD.
But the Colorado I linked to, is definitely 4WD, it says so on the VIN plate.

Michael - you can get in white, as well as black! For the $$$'s involved, you'd think they'd offer some slick colours, wouldn't you?

F650's for sale

I bought a new F100 4WD in 1977 and the colour range on offer was great.
Mine was "Pine'n'Lime", an outstanding yellow colour with a faint trace of green in it.

The early Isuzu 3.0L fitted to the RA rodeo and the first of the Colorado, was a strong engine in the way it was built ,but was absolutely gutless due to the way the pollution gear was set up on it, it could be rectified but you then had something that was illegal lol!. .Not sure when they changed to common rail, but a completely different beast..

Ron, I misunderstood the F650 ad, I assumed for $272,000, you got two vehicles. I was just wondering what colour the other F650 was!!!

That F650 has been for sale at about 6 different dealers in the last 2 years...........if not even more..... probably waaaaayyyyy to impractical

I used to drive one of those Colorado's for work. It was the most uncomfortable Ute I've ever driven. I'd never buy one.

Gee's it would be great to be rich and not have to spit sugar coated Frosties all over my PC

For that kind of money I definitely took up the wrong career path, lol;

Second the RC Colorado/dmax. I had one for 6 years and did plenty of desert/remote work with it. Couldn’t hurt it. Apart from the join in the door card ripping out the occasional leg hair I found it comfortable enough. The manuals got extra torque and for touring, the cab chassis versions had a longer wheelbase for better load carrying in all models. That’s the one I’d be looking for.

For your $20K, you could get a 2000-20006 Landcruiser HZJ79 ute(1HZ engine), and maybe have a little left over. If you could round up a few more $$$'s, you may even get into a factory Turbo, if the Kms, and the $$$'s, aren't too high. Some blokes inflate the selling price of their 1HZ ute if it's been fitted with an aftermarket turbo, but they're just dreamin'. The factory turbos are at a premium, with most examples still in mid-30's, and have seen a couple lately that are asking up to $50K!!!

Drove a 3 litre Hilux dual a number of times doing an 800km Mail run, and was surprised how good it was, except for a few electronic aids. Comfortable with aftermarket suspension, and about 10km/L economy.

A friend has an extra cab Dmax auto and it goes alright, with good economy.

Your $$$$'s, your choice........

Thanks for your comment mate will take that all in. Is the cruiser much more I'm fuel economy? I've been trying to decide for over a year now, looks like I cant go wrong with either of the toyotas

One thing to consider with a single cab ute is the seats. You can't put the seat rears way back and lie down or stretch out.

I've driven the IFS ute type vehicles and the full size 4WDs and the heavier 4WDs, Patrols & Cruisers sit on rough road more comfortably, IMO.

Also coil sprung vehicles handle rocky corrugated tracks better than leaf sprung vehicles, again IMO.

Patrol utes give you about 180 litres of fuel capacity, so do Prados.
