Seriously - if you can find a low km 2009-2011 Colorado diesel, I don't reckon you can beat them for a robust 4WD ute. They will do 500,000kms and give little trouble.

For your $20K, you could get a 2000-20006 Landcruiser HZJ79 ute(1HZ engine), and maybe have a little left over. If you could round up a few more $$$'s, you may even get into a factory Turbo, if the Kms, and the $$$'s, aren't too high. Some blokes inflate the selling price of their 1HZ ute if it's been fitted with an aftermarket turbo, but they're just dreamin'. The factory turbos are at a premium, with most examples still in mid-30's, and have seen a couple lately that are asking up to $50K!!!

Drove a 3 litre Hilux dual a number of times doing an 800km Mail run, and was surprised how good it was, except for a few electronic aids. Comfortable with aftermarket suspension, and about 10km/L economy.

A friend has an extra cab Dmax auto and it goes alright, with good economy.

Your $$$$'s, your choice........

One thing to consider with a single cab ute is the seats. You can't put the seat rears way back and lie down or stretch out.

I've driven the IFS ute type vehicles and the full size 4WDs and the heavier 4WDs, Patrols & Cruisers sit on rough road more comfortably, IMO.

Also coil sprung vehicles handle rocky corrugated tracks better than leaf sprung vehicles, again IMO.

Patrol utes give you about 180 litres of fuel capacity, so do Prados.
