Well I finally became a Member of VKS 737 today after all these years.
Callsign Sierra 98

My Codan 6924 radio has recently had the frequency installed and the radio was serviced at the same time and for a 25watt set it works well through my multi-tap whip aerial. Have picked up Charters Towers loud and clear and Tennant Creek as well. Haven't tested calling yet but will do so soon. Messages can always be relayed anyway.

Cost
Codan 6924 $850 (some time ago and including 8 RFDS Channels)
New Multitap whip aerial $316
VKS channel and service $170
VKS Membership $ 66

So for $1402 I have an improved working HF system

Hi Willem,

I am sure you will find the VKS network a great comfort, particularly when in the outback and otherwise all alone, I know I certainly do. Its a great comfort to listen in on the scheds and hear the weather and road updates and be able to contact someone if required.

Cheers

Willem,

Great choice. VKS 737 is a fantastic service and a great comfort when travelling as a single vehicle. The scheds have some excellent information and serve as an great safety feature. The stations are also excellent resources for checking if your system is working. When I first installed mine I called in to Alice for a radio check, the operator was then able to remote his signal through a couple of other stations to see how it was all working. A fantastic service, well worth the $. I am currently in the US so am not up on the net; however, they have kept my callsign and membership open for when I return in January. I will be rejoining before I leave here and will have the HF up and running ASAP after I get home. Hope to catch you on the airwaves.

Cheers
