We crossed East to West with an off road trailer, we averaged 4 Km per litre.
The car is a 4.2L Turbo Charged Landcruiser Automatic

WHAAAT! 4km/l with a diesel???
Yep I know they are overweight & oversize for not a lot of inside space.
What were you towing???
Did the French line in Triton diesel fairly lightly laden & about 9km/l, pretty much the same as I got on fast dirt roads.
Would not 6-7 km/l be more like it or has this new technology gone wrong somewhere??

As I understand, fuel consumption from the 120 series petrol is about the same as the 90series petrol. With the 90series, you needed about 130 litres from
Birdsville to
Oodnadatta with side trips (700-750km).
Answer is that you'll be fine on your standard 180 litre tanks.
