Greetings all, starting to plan next years big one and have a query regarding ULP restrictions. Will my Duel fuel 4.2efi GQ be ok on Avgas or do I need another plan?
Cheers Scott

I think you need another plan. I believe avgas has around 800ppm of lead and will destroy the catalytic converter for one thing, as for other damage maybe someone else can inform you but I wouldn't be putting it in my petrol motor. (if i had one!)

Sell it, buy a diesel and you will not have the fuel supply problem. You will also use less of it and as a nomad myself, when you do the big trip, the reduced power will not matter on most roads. The roads where it does matter, you have more time to enjoy the view and passing scenery.

Scott,
where exactly do you intend to go. It is often possible to carry enough extra fuel so you don't need to use Avgas. Or at least you can dilute the Avgas to a half. As for being illegal, I haven't seen to many coppers sniffing to see if you are running Avgas in the Centre. On a recent trip an 80 series Toyota ran Avgas without problems. At that age the catalytic converter was exhausted anyway.

Toyota 80 series, the one I had anyway, did not come out with a catalytic converter because they are classed as commercial vehicles for ADR purposes, so are exempt. Not sure about the patrol though. If it has, you better find another way.

Thanks for the replies. I going from Perth via Warburton to Ulara before heading up NT and coming back down through the Kimberly. The only bit that is going to be an issue is about 1000k's from Leonora to Ulara with my last top up of ULP being Leonora. What is meant by a knacked Cat Convertor? Does it block up or just stop cleaning the gases.(perhaps I can get it removed before hand) Avgas has an Octane of about 116 so at least the old girl would go pretty well!

ULP is available at Laverton last time I was there about 2 years ago. Can't see any reason why it would change - too many petrol cars in Laverton. Fill up there and get another 134 kms out of the tank. There may be petrol in Warburton. Phone the Laverton police station. They go out that way all the time.

Hi Feret,

AVGAS due lead content will ultimately poison the catalyst (i.e. it will no longer oxidise = bad emissions) and will kill the oxygen sensor (i.e. fuel economy will take a dive as mixture settings default rich). The odd tank should be OK, especially if diluted.

We are travelling the GCR to Ayers Rock in 3 weeks. We have diesel, however my point is that you should recheck your distances as last ULP is not Leonora. You can get it at Laverton and also Cosmo Newberry, which leaves ~ 830 km without ULP to Ulara. The trip notes on this site refer.

Regards, Hugh
