Spot on equinox, it also is known by another name by the locals, I can't quite remember what it was, something to do with dingoes & pups owing to the shape.

Yes, the area has a number of domes similar to the Bungle Bungles. This is a shot from the air of the same formation.

Not quite Kings Canyon itself, but part of the same range zanderslot, equinox got there first with the correct name of the formation, Carmichael Crag, part of the George Gill Range.

I didn't recognise it. Last time we crossed at Dunbar was 2006 and it was a lot hairier than that. They've turned it into a highway.

When I posted Palmer River at Drumduff, I was actually thinking of Mitchell River at Dunbar. Doh!!!

We were there in 2010 with another couple, both towing Kimberley Karavans. There was no matting, instead a sign advertising recoveries at $1000 per vehicle, IIRC.

After one of us got stuck in the dry sand while manoeuvring we figured the sandy base was too treacherous, the water too high and decided to give the crossing a miss and divert to Gamboola.

That’s how I remember it too. A couple of painted 44’s and some warning signs on corrugated iron IIRC. Fun for all.

From what i have read from other posts in the past the crossing has been a bit of a disaster in the past ....
Before the mats , a good alternative route from the gulf to the cape ..
