Below is a very handy URL, from which I have downloaded many topographical maps. But at some point (around 1 October last year, while I was in Oz) it quit working. :(

Happily, it is functioning again and all sorts of topo maps are again available to download.

Download maps here.

This may be old news to some of you. But I was delighted and others may also find the link useful. :)

Do beware, at least some maps (e.g., 50K maps) are in tiff format and the files are huge...as in 300+ MB.

EDIT: By Modsquad to fix the link

Remove the "%20%20" from the beginning of the URL and you'll get a page of search results. Take your choice after that.

Leave you to check if you can get the products you want.

All old ones?

State 50k topos are still the best around IMO.

Vic and maybe NSW still allows you to define a map area online and save it as a georeferenced PDF.

Or get the ViewRanger app and sub - includes some state's topos around this scale.

TX for that link, enjoying a few maps, not that we're not well served with digital and traveller ect.
I'm even thinking of getting a few printed.
Is the resolution OK to get them printed up to the correct size?
Anybody actually have them printed in recent times?

They are all Australian Military (RA Svy) maps, dating from 1968 to 2006.

Despite the Australian Military maps being very good, they are seriously dated, and I don't really understand why they are being put online, unless it is purely for historical record purposes.

There have been major changes to roads, railways, tracks, mining operations, and general infrastructure, certainly from 1968, and even between 2006 and 2020.

Unless you're travelling in semi-desert or desert, uninhabited areas, the maps are not really 100% useful, and there are much better, current mapping options, available. EOTopo Maps are the best for 4WD'ing.

Cheers, Ron.

The 50K maps are probably all RASC Ron. Afaik NatMap/Auslig/GA didn't generally publish standard 50K topo maps, they stuck to 100K and 250Ks.

These are cartographic products so inevitably out-of-date and spatially inaccurate to some extent - esp in built areas. I found a composite map of the ACT I'm interested in as a hardcopy - a litho printed map, not inkjet copy. $11.95

They are 50k topographical maps..nothing has changed in that respect (worth noting). If you want road/touring maps there are indeed better options. I find large scale topo maps facinating even if they dont have todays roads/buildings on them.

Cheers

I sent one final shout after him to stick to the track, to which he replied “All right,” That was the last ever seen of Gibson - E Giles 23 April 1874

Sorry for messing up the link in the OP, thx to ModSquad for fixing it.

No, these are not road maps for touring. But they have their value. ;)
