Connecting USB GPS to laptop

Hi again, I am new to the mapping apps & have started using ExplorOz Traveller. I have a Lenovo laptop & a GlobalSat BU-353-S4 USB GPS Receiver. I don't seem to be able to get the receiver to talk to the laptop. Is anyone using this combination? Any suggestions on how to set this up?

Have you installed the driver? https://www.globalsat.com.tw/en/a4-10593/BU-353S4.html

The receiver will then appear as a serial interface. You can look in device manager under serial devices. You can check it and configure it like this

http://www.plaisance-pratique.com/IMG/pdf/BU-353.pdf

It will be allocated the next serial interface ( 2, 3, etc) and a baud rate and set up. In your mapping program where you can select the mouse, select NEMA, and the same device and parameters.

Provided you are outside it should start locking into the position. The first time may take several minutes.

Here are the instructions https://www.globalsat.com.tw/ftp/download/GMouse_Win_UsersGuide-V1.0.pdf

Thank you for the info. I've got the actual gps working, it's flashing as it should & I run the GPSinfo program & I can see it working. I can also see it in the device manager.
I nust can't get it to talk to Traveller. I'm outside, disconnected from wifi.
I can't see an option in Traveller to select NEMA?

Hi Stefandsal

To be honest, I have not used the Traveller app, as I do not have tablet or phone to use in the car, but use OziExplorer on laptops.

Does the travellers app have the option foe selecting what type of GPS you are using?

In Ozi, you have many such options, as from what I am told, which could be incorrect, they all output different type of data.

In Ozi there are about 6 makes of GPS unit to select, and then on top of that you have corded USB and Serial mouse and then then Bluetooth, as they all have different Data outputs, Baud Rates and Garmin use PVT instead of NMEA.

Just wondering if you have to select what type of GPS you are using?

Good luck and I hope someone using the Travells app will be able to point you in the right direction.

Appreciate that info Stephen. I'm on the verge of having it working I believe...I downloaded GPS Direct & worked out how to interface it with Traveller. I'm going for a drive soon so we'll see.

I'm posting this as a reply in case someone else has the same drama...so, it is working but there are few tricks for those of us who aren't very good with computers.

1. Keep the usb connected to the same usb port
2. Run the GPS direct program with the mapping app closed.
3. Configure GPS Direct to the correct COM port & baud rate & then press "install" on GPS Direct.
4. Once it's running, open the mapping app.

If done on this order, she works a beauty. Thanks for your help everyone.
