Good morning all,
I am just after some useful information from people that have towed a 23 ft caravan from
Darwin, to Booroloola,to
karumba and then onto
Weipa,
can this journey be done without totally destroying our van, or should we drop the van off at
Cooktown, and then tent it the rest of the way to the tip.
you learned advice please

Hi Broodie, can’t speak for the roads from
Darwin to
Normanton, but we towed a 2.5T Off Road van from
Melbourne through outback NSW & Qld to
Normanton, then
Karumba, then on to the Cape. You don’t say how heavy your van is, length is probably not as important for this trip as the weight is.
The road from
Normanton to
Karumba is good sealed road. From
Karumba to
Weipa, there is a mixture of good sealed road, good gravel road, and not so good gravel with corrugations. That was in 2018, and road conditions change from day to day. Also, much more of the Peninsula Development Road is now being sealed. Hope this helps.
Macca.

Hi Maclaren 3030,
Our van weights in at 2.8 tonne fully loaded, the tow rig is a ford
RANGER WITH A GVM UPGRADE 350kg AND 2" LIFT. I tend to err on the side of caution when loading the van and if we don't need it , we don't load it.
it makes life so much better.

Broodie, your van will need to cope with a few corrugations if going through Booroloola but otherwise OK.
Then you should have no issue getting to
Weipa.

Hi Allen,
I have to ask, have you you travelled that road from
Darwin to Booroloola, I am pretty sure our van will cope with some corrugations and if we drive to the conditions we should be fine, but if we don't go that way is there another route that could take us through that area, to your knowledge????

Broodie, The road is sealed to Booroloola but unsealed from there to
Doomadgee with the usual corrugations. Then some sealed, some unsealed to
Normanton, although that sealing may have been completed in the last year.
But as has been said, there are water crossings that may present a challenge to your caravan's clearance and could even challenge your
Ranger's traction on the exit.
Driving a Troopy and not towing, we cope with any & all road surfaces without issue so I don't always note the 'finer' details. And I have never towed a caravan so am not knowledgable about their capabilities/limitations.
However, it is the
Savannah Way and I think a lot of vanners go through there.
EDIT: I should have added.... driving a Troopy I do remember the corrugations though!

Broodie H3, I travelled much of that route 2 years ago. The stretch from
Borroloola to Hells
Gate back then would challenge a van of that length. The corrugations were bad enough but there were a couple of river crossings that required higher than normal approach and departure clearances. I was towing a 5m hybrid with good clearance and got through ok. The rivers weren't deep but there were washouts at one in particular. A semi was stuck on the departure heading west (our approach) as he lost traction which then limited options for others. From Hells
Gate on it is mainly sealed or at least semi sealed. The road is wide with good visibility but quite a lot of mining traffic - hence the corrugations. Conditions will vary depending on maintenance.

Please stay away from Boroolooa and
Karumba. I'm heading that way next week ??
Just joking
The roads are sealed with some unsealed sections - some are classed as developmental roads so they are single lane. Just be sure to keep your wits about you and when you see a road train or similar, slow down and get
well off the road because they cant leave the black top.
Enjoy yourself, don’t be in a rush and you will be fine
On the dirt, drop the tyre pressures down and slow down
