Hi all
Just back from a trip from Sunny Coast Qld to
Innamincka,
Walkers Crossing,
Warburton Crossing, K1 line,
Poeppel Corner & back into
Birdsville. Conditions were great & no issues with the vehicles, 200 series, Prado & Navara.
I used an 80 Waeco for a fridge & didn't have any probs there either.
I did however ponder the idea of an upright fridge in the back instead. If I could find one that fits & made sure everything was secure inside, what are the obvious disadvantages that I'm clearly missing?

To put it unscientifically, you "lose more cold" every time you open a front opening fridge than you do with a chest fridge.
To counter that, in our caravan fridge we use storage containers that fit snugly between shelves and also side-by-side to reduce the spill of cold air when the door is opened.
I also fitted two tonneau cover bungee loops to keep the door firmly shut while travelling, rather than rely on a single latch.

Apologies for being off topic, but just wondering are the flies bad at the moment at
Innamincka. Doing a trip there in a couple of weeks. Got to keep the better half happy.
Cheers Gazza

No drama buddy, yeah bad enough. We went to
the Dig Tree & that warranted a fly net...in town, not so bad but it was later in the arvo by the time we got there...I'd be taking a fly net again.

I bought an Engel 80L upright for my alloy canopy. No need for a drop slide(save 30-40kgs) and access to everything is much better in an upright. My Boss gave it the thumbs up!
Franks right, the cold air falls out when you open it, but if it's
well packed & full of food, there's buggger all air to fall out. On some long trips, I've used a sheet of cardboard to block most of cold air falling out.
Do a bit of research on all the brands & models. The Engels are good but lack an interior light & flaps on front of shelves. Bushman seem okay, or maybe Waeco. Just make sure there is plenty of clearance to open the door fully in your desired position.

Hi Bob
Sorry for the late reply. How do you find the freezer section? It's only 6 or 7 litres & I'm concerned it won't be enough given the 80L Waeco had like 20L...maybe I just need to pack better?

I can fit a loaf of bread & bit of other stuff in it. I've used a 40L Engel chest fridge as a freezer, so don't rely on the smaller freezer too much. The 40L are power hungry when used as a freezer, so maybe cyrovac food would be the go, and not need a freezer?

I have a Bushman 130 litre upright fridge in my truck canopy and it works excellent. Australian company and been around for 30 years, while I have never had any problems with the fridge they have good reviews. While you do loose some cold air when opening the door it does not seem to the performance. I live in FNQ with temperatures around 35 to 38 degrees in summer. My only criticism is that it does not have a temperature gauge fitted as standard which can be easily overcome. Would never go back to an esky type fridge. Everything you want is always on the bottom.

Easy as. Was open. Could have done it in a Yaris! But it may have rained since then.
