Hi Tim, I have a couple of hilux's and the timing belt service light came on. The boys changed it and reset the computer for the next change of belt. My lux's are 2011 & 13.

If the dash is the same it should be set to indicate at the intervals given in the vehicle manual. ie, normal is 100,000km But unless you have had the vehicle for the time when the interval and indicator has functioned and belt then changed it seems you were unaware of it's presence, you may not know if the belt has been changed and it may be requiring replacement. If the belt breaks because the belt change hasn't been done then engine damage will occur and new donk then. If unsure have it changed. Belts are cheaper than engines.

Be careful. Hire car company’s & mining company’s don’t change the belt at 100.000 kms . They can afford to take the chance. They just ping the light out or re set it. They don’t keep them much longer than that. You end up paying.

Dispute that statement. Do you think that a hire car company (I used to work for Hertz) or a mining company (I'm in the game now) would take a chance on trashing an engine to save a few bucks on a timing belt?? Seriously??
The loss of revenue from the downtime of a vehicle off the road would be enormous. Even a cheap hire car company couldn't afford a damaged engine or vehicle downtime for that matter. And mining companies vehicles now have to meets strict OHS standards re service, maintenance and operation. As they say, ïf the wheels aint turning, it aint earning"
Changing a timing belt is cheap insurance.

I had a hire twin cab hi lux as part of my job package for over 12 months. When 100.000 ks timing light came up I put it into hire co’s approved service can’t & that’s what they told him to do. I also worked in mining for many years with close association to the w/
shop & if the fleet was due for changeover in next year or so they would do the same. Buyer beware of ex hire or mining vehicles.

At the back of the 'cluster' at the 'timing belt' warning light there is a small switch , actually a 're-set' , on the 2005 it needs an opened paper clip to push the button inside , light won't come 'on' until next 100,000 ks .....
