I'm considering a trip here in a few weeks and would like our son to join us for the drive up and to camp in his campervan but its not 4WD. Just a Kia Preggio. Anyone been here and can advise? It appears they promote access driving on the station is 4WD only but is it possible for a van like his to setup camp?

Hi Michelle.

Have looked at their website and they advertise that :-

"It can provide a suitable spot for people that have a little car with a tent and basic camping facilities, to those with a bigger off-road van or Motorhome."

Cheers,

Mike

I know the owners (Belinda and Calum) at MHS from my Snowy Horse Treks, let them know I send my regards.

Also can you do a recon for a National Gathering there? I have had initial chats and emails with them and was thinking Winter would be the best time to gather there. Will possibly be in 2022 as we need to get to Mt Ive next year.

Cheers Kev

HI Kev yes I was aware from our previous discussions last year that you had ear-marked this spot for a 2022 gathering and I reckon its absolutely perfect for a gathering spot - so many 4WD tracks, great fishing, and a bit of everything for everyone. I'm really hoping we can get up there for a brief visit in a couple of weeks and have it mostly sorted out now. I've just been corresponding with them and have the mud mup and lots of extra info - will forward this to you now via email to help with your planning.

We were in Kalbarri only a few weeks ago and went quad biking on Murchinson Station.
There's both sorts of camping, 4WD and 2wd
The 2WD are beside the river near the Homestead and the 4WD is across the river and where ever you want ( almost ) depending on sand / rocks etc
We saw some great flood plain areas that could be used for a "Muster" across the river,
We explored the Murchinson and agreed that camping there on either side of the river would be just what we like, and have put it into "future Box "

HI Ron, that's great to hear. We've been told that the only area's available for the school holidays is on the northern side of the river on the "downstream" section where you have to camp 200m back from the river. They call it the Bush camping but don't discriminate between 4WD/2WD but they seem to think we will get the 2WD van in somewhere if we let the tyres down. Is there actually a 2WD specific area - seems that is full I guess? Do you recommend the quad bike tour?

Hi again Ron - can you tell me about water levels in the river section near the homestead please?

The 2 WD drive area is along the river at the homestead side and I suppose it would be booked out several months ago, like the rest of the area.
The river crossing is easy for a 2WD and although there's a bit of sand I assume it would be ok if tyres were let down to 15 psi.
Possibly run a 4wd before him with a rope attached, just to be sure,
The quad bike tour is interesting and gives you quite a good view of some of the station, as well as some great camping areas that are both 2 wd and 4 wd accessable.
They use both 2 person ATV's and solo ATV"s for the tour and once again booking is not too easy.

There's also great camping at Lucky Bay and Coronation Beach, both DEC areas
I considered Lucky bay the better of the 2 , it's also 2wd friendly in behind the sand dunes and definately 4wd for the bay its self.

Thanks Ron,
We are booked at MHS and will be camping at Cliff Head North and Lucky Bay on way up. Didn't know of Lucky Bay previously - so have added that to Places also.

Most of the access tracks to camping areas away from the river require decent ground clearance and the sand can be soft in places. I think with a bit of momentum you could pull through the soft bits. Most vans have reasonable ground clearance.
Its a nice place to explore for those with a 4wd.

Was a while ago (8 years!) that we were there and camped on the north west end. Back then you could camp right on the riverfront, but now restricted to 200m back (why???).

Anyway, I do not expect the tracks have changed that much, should be easy enough for a Pregio to get there if accompanied by your 4x4.

This was about as boggy as the sand got, was easily able to tow my 2T van at 20psi. While this pic is on the flat, you do have a ~500m long sandy section with a small incline back out that may need a helping hand.

Here is the downhill sandy section, was there with about 4 other vans and none had issues towing back up.

Cheers
