Just wondering if anyone has made something up to lift things off there roof rack .
Have a box that weighs around 25 kg . Would like to be able to lower it to the ground instead of trying to lift it down.

Quite a few years ago I made a lifting device using a small 12v winch from a cheapy Chinese quad bike, it had a lifting capacity of supposedly 500Kg but in actuality it was struggling to lift 200 Kg.
I had a square 2" tube across the rear of the roof basket and the winch would slide into that
An "L" shaped bar that slid onto the 2'' tube with round tube welded onto the L and came up to the height of the basket and a round pipe sat over it as a pivot point, so you could rotate the winch to a desirable position, lift the spare wheel, then rotate the arm so the wheel was over the side of the old Troopy and lower it down to the ground.
The 12v winch connected by an Andersen plug sat at the side of the top arm and had a small sheave wheel to roll the cable through,
The hoist arrangement sat and traveled inside the 2" tube, laying on its side and clipped up to the side of the basket.
This is a basic outline of it, had a few pics but got lost inbetween several computer changes
Ron
I made a few for interested people and then got another job and that was it.

I've tried that too, but it was expensive and only works intermittently.

And they complain about being stuck up on the roof rack all the time.

I forgot to mention the irritating whine when it works too.

I'd go with a wide A frame that would pivot on one side of the rack and be secured to the opposite side with a non stretch rope or straps. It will swing it out clear of the vehicle for the up and down, but then can be swung inboard reasonably easily.
Something a bit like these guys has done for loading a kayak. You wouldn't need the slide out rails to position the load for lifting though.

I knew a guy that competitively fished (I didn't know it was a thing either) off a Hobie Kayak.
His kayak and fishing gear was worth more than the Prado he moved it around with, so probably worth looking after it.

Hoyks, catching fish is always competitive for me. The fish invariably win!
