Sparra, you are absolutely correct. Now why did they do it?

The rock was cut by the Chinese Gold Miners to divert the river thereby slowing the flow into the bend. This enabled them to collect the gold in the still water of the bend. Considering it was cut in the 1800's its not a bad effort.

The reason I had for the cutting was the same as yours, but I don't think Harrison is an old Chinese name.
I must have a look for more information. I have been there a few times and it was always flowing fast and clear.

I meant to add, as we had a few rivers mentioned, that it is on the Dargo River north of Dargo.

These huts are not on the Dargo River but are located north of Dargo

Treasures Hut's are actually private property unlike most of the other Mountain Cattlemen Huts so I will decline the opportunity to include their exact location.
