Water taint in SS tank

Hi all.
We've just spent a small fortune on having a stainless steel water tank made for our car. From the first day there was an unpleasant taste to the water. No worries, we'll flush it a few times over a period of weeks. This hasn't worked! Our last tank, made by the same firm, was fine from the get go.
So, has anyone got any sensible tips on how we can permanently get the taint out of our water?
Thanks, Deejay.

Can you take it back? Call them and ask what to do ? Seems to me it is contaminated in some way.

Cheers

Nope. We're getting it from our home kitchen tap via a multi million dollar water filter system.

Hi,
How are you transfering the water to your tank was the question, not its source. i.e we are assuming a hose of some sort? Probably not the issue but needs to be ticked off.

Cheers

Thanks Explorer.
My wife decants the water to the tank using 3 litre plastic Frantelle bottles.

Deejay

I had a very bad taste in plastic tanks that would not flush out.

I added a litre of red cordial into each tank. Filled them almost full and traveled a few hundred kms. Emptied and refilled the tanks and the taste has been gone for more than 4 years.

Hope that works for you.

Astonishingly red cordial is a oft recommended tool for this taint. I have had two water hoses that were allegedly "drinking water" hoses make the water taste undrinkable and have just bought one that seems to be OK!!

Your wife must be a saint transferring water like that!

Thanks Bonz.
She is a health and fitness tragic which drives me crazy. We set off from home with the tank (40L) having been painstakingly filled by her over several hours and when we run out a few weeks later we have to search out supermarkets to buy bottled water or she won't drink any water at all which breaks the first rule of a health junkie, 'thou shalt drink 10 litres of water a day'. Makes for some tense moments I can tell ya!

Not sure about sainless but lemon juice works ok in plastic tanks.

Drinking water out of a clean creek or put it through your filter first or topping up from a tap in a town at rest areas would be better for her health than from plastic water bottles from the shops when travelling.

Might also want to re-think how much water you need to drink daily just because someone on the net or where ever tells people how much they need to drink doesn't mean it's correct as everone is different. It depends on a lot of varying factors like sweating, activity, exercise, daily temperature etc etc. Also why the hell would you want to make your life, others uncomfortable thinking that forcing yourself to gallons of water each day thinking it will be good for your health as it can also create longterm underlying mental issues. My nan was always on the go grew vegies at home mostly drank tap water at room temp not chilled drank tea, coffee daily like her generation did and lived at home till 101yrs old and not stressing about things that dont matter.

I agree Batts. I think your health and longevity are largely in your genes and that sustaining a very stringent diet and exercise regime is not going to guarantee you a long and healthy life. I do agree however that you don't be totally neglectful though.

A few questions to perhaps narrow the source of the taint:
- How do you get the water out of the tank e.g. hand/electric pump with plastic lines, tap on tank with gravity feed?
- Is the taint a metallic, oil/kero/diesel type taste, plastic or earthy?

Thanks Warren.
The tank is at the very back of car so only a 300mm length of drinking water hose is used via a ball valve then brass barbed tail. I used a sealant paste on the threads but only sparingly for obvious reasons. To me, the taint is of rubber but no rubber is used anywhere in the set up. I'll try the above recommendations and if I have no luck I'll strip the bottom fittings and remove the sealant and see if that makes a difference. Oddly, the tank is made of the same grade SS as the last one, by the same guy and using the same fittings and sealant. I was very surprised to find this has happened.

Hi Deejay, could you isolate the tank from the off-take and thus determine whether it is the tank or off-take?

Thanks Bob. I've seen this stuff - I'll give it a try (as soon as we're allowed out of our houses and able to travel).
