Gidday JJ,

It has been a while since I was out there, the White Cliffs area is a smaller version (and less populated) of Cobber Peddy. I thought it was worth the drive, there are underground houses you can visit, the camp ground is something to behold. It is all typical of outback NSW and it is all worth a visit.

The row of solar panels that were built as a university experiment and at one time powered most of white cliffs... the 'golf course'...the pub...underground hotels...Jock's place ( a must see)...get Jock to take you on a tour through the diggings....the mirages on the horizon....long drive but interesting if you havent been to Coober

Yes. A visit to Jock's Place is a must. It is an experience not to be missed - you'll never forget it!!

Cheers

White Cliffs is well worth seeing. Where the other opal fields are now all big business & big machines, White Cliffs is more of the old time battlers field with the hand winch still used.
If you get sick of the area you can move down the road to Mutawintji NP. I could spend a week there an still go back for more. If you do go to the Historic site, take the guided tour, worth the $10 or $15.

Definitely Jock's place, I'm going to go back so the wife can see him, he's also a must see if you ever had any ideas about trying opal mining for a living. There are also a few nice characters who sell the opals, I,m having a mental blank with the names tho.

The Underground Motel is a must see and I believe PJ"s B&B allows visitors and is well worth an overnight stay if you want to give yourselves a treat.

Took a few friends to Jocks and he gave us such a greeting my friends thought I knew him. His tour is memorable and good value.

There was a working mine tour but this was closed due to insurance costs.

Mootwingee National Park has good facilities (solar hot water) and plenty to see.

If you get as far as Broken Hill, Silverton is also a must see. Worth an overnight camp at Penrose Park (quite cheap) with an easy walk over the creek to the Pub which is full of Mad Max and other movie memorabilia (spelling?)

Enjoy

Bob L

Thanks all for your info on White Cliffs -sounds like the sort of place we would like to explore!! (specially 'jock's place'!!)
We have been to Mootwingee NP but always intended on going back cos we missed seeing the historic sight (it was closed), so might venture that way too?
Cheers JJ
