Good morning all, a quick question re the rule on number plate height, "a number plate fitted to the rear of the vehicle must not be more than 1300mm from the ground", where is that measured from, top of plate, bottom of plate, centre of plate? Does anybody have a definitive answer? Thanks in advance.

NO PART of the plate may be more than 1300mm above the ground.

Unless you built the van yourself, I would not worry about it. The manufacturer placed it there and the van past the initial registration.

Kazza, unfortunately the owner is responsible and will get the fine and points. I have checked mine, it was close, 1270mm to top of plate. Mate's is about 2 metres or more.

Kazza055, I don't know whether you will find it on this forum. However, if you do a search of forums you will find members who have been breached for having their plates too high.

"you will find members who have been breached"
Sounds pretty painful to me. :)

Kazza,

I would not place too much “trust” in the manufacturer doing the “right thing” in this regard. There are a number of examples out there of vans with incorrect information on their “compliance plates”, I have also seen relatively new vans with the number plate positioned higher than 1300 mm. Of course, these may have been “modified” by the owner and not “as built” by the manufacturer.

I was pulled up because my van plate did not meet the visibility requirements - not visible from 45 degrees above. Yet that was how the van was built by the manufacturer. The same manufacturer had registered a type certificate with NSW RMS with an unrealistic tare weight.

I had to relocate the number plate and with the increased attention by the authorities to weights, had to get a weight upgrade to my van - tare, GTM and ATM.

You'd think it would be fairly simple for the Caravan Manufacturer to get it right, wouldn't you! I had to shift mine after a series of caravanners were booked by an over zealous young police officer around our area.

It's not an unreasonable expectation, Is it Notso?

But the caravan industry is permitted to self regulate, so the shonks can pump out their non-compliant or poor quality products without a worry in the world.

"Self regulation" - a gold standard oxymoron.
