I've been using Traveller on my Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 since Traveller was released. Traveller's turn by turn driving directions were spoken by Karen (Jacobsen), a highly successful Australian voice-over specialist whose voice is used in over a BILLION GPS devices!!! Why? - simply because she has a very listenable, cultured Australian voice that apparently has universal appeal. She is Apple's Australian Siri voice and is the voice in Google Maps and elsewhere. See her client list at the bottom of
her web page.
Over Christmas I updated my Samsung tablet and was very disappointed to find that Karen had gone on holidays, to be replaced by lass of undetermined British
heritage with a thick accent that was hard for me to understand and who could not pronounce Australian place and street names for love nor money.
I initially thought that the latest Traveller update was the issue, but Michelle advised me that Traveller uses the device's default text to speech engine, so it seemed that the updated device or updated Android might have been the issue, not the Traveller app itself.
In an attempt to get Karen back I downloaded and installed some Australian and other female voices but all were harsh or could not pronounce Aussie place names very
well - not a patch on Karen's dulcet tones.
Why was she there on my old device, but not on the new? I decided to
check the settings on the old device to see what was different from the new and found that the old one defaulted to Google's text-to-speech engine, whereas the new one's default was Samsung's TTS engine.
I changed the TTS engine in the new device to Google's, and there was Karen, back from holidays with her velvet tones and impeccable Aussie pronunciations.
If you're like me and dislike having lost Karen in a device upgrade, then hopefully this post will help you find her. It might also apply in similar fashion to iOS device updates, but I have no experience with those so cannot say for sure.
Cheers
