Hi
My first post so be gentle. Before i
sign up for the Exploroz apps i would like some advice on what Ipad to look for that will be suitable for this application. I understand I need wifi and cellular to use the GPS function and I know what to look for in a ipad to get this, but however dont really want to spend $700 on a new Ipad . Some secondhand units say "3G" but I thought this was being phased out soon , so would that render the unit as useless for navigation? I am I better to find a 4G unit ? What Gb do I need ? or what would people recommend.
Many thanks for any assistance on this
Kind regards
Steve

Hi Steve
Have had iPads forever and never had a problem. Definitely 4G, and probably 128Gb. You could work OK with 64 Gb.
If you can't buy new, next best is Apple's second hand "refurbished" ( Apple Australia) , then you take pot luck. Make sure you can contact seller by Australian phone number (try it), and use PayPal ( they hold your money until you are happy).
Good luck.
Cheers
Jim

See Duncan2H's thread (141184) a couple down below yours, $250 is all you should need to pay for a good Android tablet.
Sounds like you don't use a Tablet heavily, perhaps you can get away with hot spotting to your phone so you don't need one which uses a SIM card, which are much cheaper.
My sub $250 Samsung TabletA with 64GB runs ExplorOz Topo and maps perfectly

You need the 3g/4g model ipad because the gps chip is incorporated in the sim control chip. Not so with an Android tablet, the gps chip is separate. The ipad gps will work without a sim card in the slot but obtains and maintains a fix quicker with a sim card because the gps chip has the ability to use mobile phone tower data to trangulate its position quicker than just obtaining a satellite fix.
Whether it can still obtain the mobile phone tower data after 3G is turned off, I don't know, but at worst it will function the same as no sim in the slot at all.
If you aren't tied to Apple at all then Android is a good and cheaper option.

Apple do what Apple do and it costs more for same functionality. Do you really require a tablet device to read phone towers and will just a GPS chip in the device do your navigating with your chosen program be ok for you?
I am not a big user of navigation, others a lot more, but have never had a device which relies or uses towers and phone to find out where I am lost. If you want to spend the additional $450 for a bite of an Apple then ok, It seems some of the recommendations in this thread/post and previous ones below would suffice.

no need for data connectivity. purchase the map pack along with exploroz and run the maps offline. if you need internet hotspot your phone .
Lenovo do a 10.3" tab for under $250 and will do everything the expensive overpriced samsung and crapple devices do for 4 times the price.

If you are not going to use the SIM Card facility to go online, why not buy a good Bluetooth GPS mouse for far less the difference between WiFi and WiFi plus cellular.
