Hi fellow Explorozians. we need to update our old Hema navigator and was looking at the EOTOPO maps.
2 quick questions.
1) What devices are people using for the mapping, Tablets or phones etc (we suspect phone is too small)
2 ) Is the street mapping ok around Melb/Syd etc as a GPS replacement?

Thanks,

Hi Nelly
We use an iPad, with iPhone to back up if necessary. IPad has always worked.
As well as EO Topo we have Google and Apple maps for towns.
Haven’t got lost so far !!
There are plenty of alternatives, mostly cheaper than Apple.

Cheers
Jim

Hi Nelly

I use an iPad as well. If you have a iPhone I would suggest an iPad.

However if I had Samsung phone I would use a Samsung tablet.

If you want a tablet with built in GPS, Samsung tablets have a built in GPS, Apple tablets require provision for a sim card for it to have a GPS. Don't actually need a sim just needs to be capable of it.

Pros and cons for both.

Cant comment on the street mapping around Melb/Syd but have found it to be ok elsewhere.

Apple iPad Cellular has built in GPS. Doesn’t require any other hardware.

Yes Jim thats correct

iPads

Wifi only ...no GPS

Wifi & cell.. has GPS....but does not need the sim card for the GPS to work.

What ever device you use, if it has a sim onboard, then you could always use Apple or Google maps while in range. The benefit of these apps over any other offline mapping tool is you can search for a business name and congestion info etc.

Within the ExplorOz Traveller, when you are in mobile service range the app offers the use of online maps - being EOTopo online (18K scale) on Level 16 as well as streets and paths so you don't need to change apps. In fact the app auto switches between online and offline maps for you.

I have just moved on from a Hema HS7 to a 10 inch Samsung S6 Lite tab with Ozi Explorer and EO TOPPO Maps as well as Hema maps and a few Topo's.

I have it on a floor mounted RAM mount and its the best thing ever, Very happy with the result.

I think 10 inch is the best screen size as it allows you to see a good size area without having to scroll around.

If you can wait, doen't buy EO Topo 2019 till the 2021 version is released shortly, as they are not giving any discount price to upgrade from 2019 to 2021
