I'd second Snowy's. A good all-round store with good product and pricing. They are a genuine croos-over store, catering for the rucksack crowd and the 4wder. They'll give you good, honest advice.

Kathmandu gear is okay, but overpriced. They rely on their "specials" to sell, which really just brings their gear down to reasonable prices. Even then, they can be beaten on price regularly.

Cheers, Mark.

@wicket Thanks for sharing the link. I will check them out. Currently, I have searched for some products in the Kathmandu store. Their prices are high, but it seems like they have quality products. Any experiences with this store?

I have bought numerous things from snowys over the years , good products and good people to deal with. Give them a call and you’ll find they’ll be most helpful.

What do you plan to use it for, who, do you feel the cold, are you travelling in a vehicle or hiking, and what climate? Best can mean many things.

Snowy's have a good guide and good pricing.

Personally, I would avoid Katmandhu like the plague, they do have some top-end gear but they are overpriced. and you will probably waste money.

Sleeping bags are a very personal, specialised purchase. Do some homework, especially on the ratings.

My advice is to get a sleeping bag with at least 5 - 8 degree rating cooler than what you expect.

Try One Planet. Good variety and Aussie products. Try them before you buy.

Thanks for your response Boobook,
My family and I are planning to go hiking. We've already bought most of the hiking stuff. The only sleeping bag is left.
No doubt Snowy's have reasonable prices, but I never experience their products.
Yes, I've checked out many reviews on the internet about Kathmandu but still in doubt. 1 bonus point about Kathmandu is that they are offering discounts on their products which I have found here.
I don't know what to do now :(

Linda you need to provide a lot more information to get a proper answer. I do a bit of bushwalking, up to a week's duration so I have some experience, but there are plenty with more experience than me.

I suspect you should be asking this question on a bushwalking forum, not here as most members are car campers, not bushwalkers/hikers/trampers which you specifically asked about.

Major consideration is what temperatures you are likely to experience as that will determine the temperature rating of the bag and to some extent the price. How much $ you are prepared to spend.
The Kathmandu website has good information, read that. I'm not saying they make the best bags, but they have good basic information. As mentioned above, One Planet make excellent gear as do Sea to Summit.

I've found Kathmandu and Macpac bags are OK if you buy them on their 60% off sales
If you are multi day bushwalking, then weight is your enemy as is size. Have a think about how big your backpack is, how much room you have left for your bag after food, water, clothing, tent, cooking stove, sleeping mat and a few other things. How much weight can you carry?
For what it's worth over many years I've collected a big, warm 2+kg bag for car camping, a 1.4kg down bag which I have been quite comfortable in at -4 in the open and a 800gram summer weight Down bag. My 1.4kg bag covers all circumstances but I appreciate the lighter bag if I can get away with it.

Provide a few more details and people can offer more targeted answers, but your initial question is as broad as asking "which car is best"?
Enjoy your time outdoors
Mark

I am similar. I try to use the lightest bag I have for the weather (Roman palm bag - very small but not great in cold) and also take a microfibre reactor bag as a liner. I have 2 bags for when it is proper cold. The goose down bag packs down smaller but the synthetic bag will keep warm when it is wet (cold kayak trips). I have mainly Roman and black wolf bags down to -15 rated. As also stated, hiking is very different to car based camping.

If you are after particular type or brand, after trying many in my camping life, I can recommend Darche Could Mountain -12. They come in 3 widths, 900, 1100 and 1400.
One of the best sleeping bags for touring with car, use in tents, swags, campers etc.

Kings do a fantastic value for money sleeping bag that work really well and happily purchase again but typical of all the cheaper end of the market they are on the bulky side

If you are looking for compact and warm bags you will need to go for the more expensive options

Like others have said Snowys is a great mob to deal with and have a good variety of product and very useful information videos on the items they sell

I have always favoured Paddy Pallin's, an Aussie original and still up there with the best of them

Linda,
I do a fair amount of hiking and if you will be using a backpack I can offer the following advice.
Get a goose down filled bag with partitions to keep the down well spread out. Responsibly sourced down of course. You will also need to know what temperature rating you will require.
As a general rule , even though they may have some reasonably priced bags, steer a way from the multi store big chains including Kathmandu. They , like Bunnings, buy the cheapest product they can get so they can still advertise the products at a cheap retail price and still make a good profit.
Try specialist retailers like Macpac, North Face, Paddy Pallin and the like. Even though they are expensive they will stand behind their bags and you know that you will have a quality product that will last and not let you down when you are in the bush.
