Hi guys
I’ve recently purchased a weaco fridge without realising the 12v plug (hooked up to the second battery) in the back of the new car is for an Engel. I don’t particularly want to buy another fridge as I’ve already starting using the weaco via home 240v. I thinking of cutting off the cigarette plug from the weaco lead and wiring an Engel plug. Does anyone have any advice on this regarding how I can go about it?

Just make sure you fuse it correctly. Some waeco fridges had 8 amp ceramic fuses. Ceramics were rated at their nominal current carrying capacity and didnt blow till they reached 50% more which is 12 amps, I have been running a 10 amp blade fuse in mine without drama for 8 years.

I can't figure out why you say it has been set up for an Engel. Both the Engel and Waeco are designed to run on 12VDC. and all you should need is the cable to suite.

Maybe if you put the Waeco into the car and go visit your local Jaycar shop and see if they can help you plus they can sell you the correct lead you will need.

The previous owner had and Engel fridge so the original cig/merit style socket was replaced with an Engel (2 prong) style socket.

Maybe if you can post some photos we can see what you mean and then find a solution for you.

The original outlet connector was replaced with the Engel one. Just reverse the change an replace it with a Merrit socket. Alternately, if you still have use for the Engel socket, add a merit socket beside it. You will then have a better situation.

Kazza obviously does not know what an engel socket and plug is and how they are not compatible with anything else. Maybe if he took to time to google them he would find out.

On one hand it is a bit ridiculous for engel to design a system that only works with their gear but on the other hand it would be great if the whole 12v power system changed over to it - is a good system just not compatible with anything else.

Well that was so kind of you to point me in the right direction OzzieCruiser. Regardless of what is fitted, using Anderson connectors will make it easier to make changes in the future.

You could, as you say, cut the ciggy plug off the Waeco lead and replace it with an Engel plug.

Alternatively, you could remove the Engel socket from the car and replace it with a ciggy socket to suit the Waeco lead, BUT I don't recommend that. Ciggy plugs and sockets are notorious for failing, resulting in warm beer and rotten food.

So as realistic alternatives to the Engel setup you could change to Anderson plugs in both vehicle and fridge lead, or Merit, both of which are positive locking, won't fall out.

It really doesn't matter - you're just piping 12V to the fridge. Just get the polarity right and avoid ciggy plugs and sockets.

This is the best way to go, Anderson plug instead of ciggy socket and then buy a Anderson to Waeco lead for Jaycar.

I have everything connected via Anderson plugs and it is much more convenient

Have a look here - 1.8m Anderson Cable to suit Brass Monkey and Waeco Fridges

As said earlier, go and see the guys at Jaycar and they will help you sort it out.

lf you look up ebay aust and search item number 263274146318. lt's a waeco lead that has a duel plug on the end. When its screwed together it's a cig plug, when you unscrew the end it becomes an engel plug.
Great for when you want to use the frig in a different car.
Have a look at the ebay lead and if the end on your lead is the same as in the pictures you home and hosed, if not buy the lead..

The plugs that fit the new CFX range also fit the older CF range though Waeco deny this. These new plugs also use the the same 2 prong screw in system that the engel plugs use but you need to unscrew the cig lighter end off to locate. Brilliant bit of gear and removes the need for anderson plugs for Waeco type fridge cords. These can be found as the usual suspects BCF, Anaconda etc
