Hi Brains Trust,

we are planning another trip out to Mungo-Menindee- Broken Hill - Silverton and was wondering if any one had been to the Red Hill Hotel, an old film set out near Silverton, and if you had any directions how you found it. i can't find it on any maps, internet listings etc as to how to actually get there. Any advice would be great for around this area a bit out of the normal.

Cheers,

I may be wrong but I think the place you're looking for is what was known, or maybe still is, as the Little Topar Hotel on the Broken Hill toWilcannia road. Worth a start anyhow. I think the movie "Wake In Fright" may have been filmed around here.

Thanks for the Reply. You are close and on the right track that Red Hill Hotel was a movie set. It was purpose built around 1980's but i believe it is on the Mundi Mundi plain somewhere.

Hi neiiyir.

Your best bet would be to contact the BH Tourist Information Centre or the Silverton Pub.
I think you will find the Red Hill Hotel was built in the 80's opposite the Silverton Pub, in Silverton and used in movies and ads. May be gone by now, but they will answer your questions.

Cheers,

Mike

UPDDATE

The Red Hill Hotel is now privately owned and the location is kept a bit quiet as it is on Private Property.
No visits for me.

If you do get to Silverton and you havn't been to the Museum, its probably the best I have seen in a country town and only few dollars entry. I think its the old Gaol from memory. Michael

Was so disappointed when I went there last.
Used to play in the old buildings including the old gaol and was looking forward to showing my wife around the town as I remembered it. That was back in the days the mines were at their prime and Broken Hill wasnt struggling to stay alive.

Will be visiting again next year and will have a different attitude this time and try to appriciate the area for what it is now and not what it was.

.
Sometimes it can be disappointing to visit places with strong emotional history.
In our mind they usually become better.
In reality they often deteriorate.

Long Lat Google Maps:

(-31.7708450, 141.1397310)

Travel on Wilangee Rd 13klm from Silverton then turn left.
Follow dirt road (heading NW slightly off to the side of tar road) do not turn off for 4.6klm

Then turn left

Follow the dirt trail for 1.5klms

Your there! It’s just on your left.

Enjoy
