In my BT50 I use a RAM X mount on a stalk braced to stop it moving around:

I fitted a RAM mount, similar to Frank’s. Didn’t add any extra bracing, which it needs, but the oscillations of the iPad matched the incessant harmonics of the corrugations along the Canning fairly well!

Recall someone recently posted a photo on another thread of a RAM mount on windscreen, using 3 suction cups & giving favourable results.

Not sure how it would go in your Hilux but I screwed a carpeted aluminium bracket on the dash of my troopy with a dashmat over the top. That way the 8" tablet and the rearview camera screen are in the best position for the driver and not in the way of the passenger or driver. Can attach devices with Velcro or use their brackets.
Previously had a 200series and velcroed the aluminium bracket like so:

For the Troopy, I am now using a Hema HX-1 which has its own clip in holder that I really like. So if I want to swap it over for my 8" tablet running Ozi or a Tomtom or whatever, I made up a piece of carpeted ply that slots into the holder and the device sticks to it.

Hi Phil,

I am curious as to how many screws you used, and how long is the section of bracket that actually sits on top of the dash? I have a 200 Series, and would like to do something similar.

Gday Macca,
For the 200series I didn't use screws - just put two 3" strips of hook velcro on the dash back towards the windscreen. From memory the velcro needed contact adhesive for it to stick well. The bracket is simply a piece of bent aluminium with the thin marine carpet glued all over and shaped in the curve of the dash. The bracket attaches to the dash velcro, and the dashmat over the top. There is a strip of loop velcro just below the clock, that the tablet sits on . The back of the tablet rquired contact adhesive to attach a couple of strips of hook velcro. 8" tablet is the perfect size. Had a 7" early on but the bigger screen on the 8" was easier to use and read the maps. It is good if the tablet has a black back, otherwise and exposed bits will reflect on the windscreen. The tablet was stable - never moved even on the worst corrugations.
Just a tip when taking the tablet off is to separate the velcro with a blunt knife - that way you won't pull the back off the tablet. When I sold the car, I used turps to remove all signs of glue and contact adhesive.

For the 78 series I used 4 screws (felt more comfortable putting holes in the Troopy!) but its the same concept. I took off the stereo surround to find a safe place for a couple of self tappers - which are in line with each side of the stereo. I used screws because it is holding the camera screen as well as a tablet.

Hi Garry.

I've made a simple bracket from aluminium angle and just use Velcro.

Have used this system on a Hilux , Prado and now on the 200 series LC. Modified the bracket to suit but principal the same.

Have travelled all over Oz well in excess of 300,000k on all sorts of roads and it hasn't failed us.

Watch the airbags and set it up so the passenger can use it as well

We use one of these with our Prado - it's fantastic. Designed to hold laptop it doesn't wobble at all (at least it wobbles as much as the dashboard does!). You can mount a RAM tablet holder to it.

Ditto our Canter motorhome has a convenient central glovebox.
The velcro has never let go.
