Traveller app slow on iPad air

Hi all.
Recently downloaded the 2021 maps for the traveller app to iPhone X (3gb ram) and iPad Air generation 4 (4gb ram). The iPhone works perfectly with near instant loading of maps and no lag. The iPad Air however is near unusable with very slow loading of maps and lots of lagging. Anyone else had this issue and if so is there a fix?

Hi Ipad Air 4 was released in November 2012 and is not supported anymore so is quite old, time for a new one.

If you are talking about the current version of the iPad Air4 then you have a problem with yours. I purchased one last week to replace my old iPad Mini2 and the improvement in performance overall and especially downloading and installing maps, counted in seconds on the iPV4, is utterly amazing.

Steve it may not be your iPad it could be your network. So there's a bit of diagnostics needed. I suggest if you don't already, to setup your iPhone as a hotspot then link that to the iPV4 and see if download performance improves. Hopefully it will

We use a rather old now Telstra w-fi 4GX modem which is pretty good still

I didn't refresh my maps from a backup as I wanted to see how fast the new iPad is and I measured the download and install of the map panels within the three map sets as averaging 4 seconds from go to whoa. So there's your benchmark

Sorry forgot to say my iPV4 has 256GB which may add something to its performance but it should not be overly significant I would think

Thanks Rob. Network is fine as the app works fine on my iPhone X which is on the same network. My iPad Air is the 256gb version too. Going to try a iPad reset and a fresh start

I would go with the full forced reboot. So into plane mode and wi-fi and blue tooth off then forced shutdown. Wait 30 seconds then restart. If there are any sticky links that should be the end of them.

But be aware the EO site can be pretty laggy at times. So that may contribute to your slow downloads and installs but really should only impact on the downloads. The installs should be very fast

Done a complete new setup on iPad and downloaded traveller app. No change. Also tried your forced full reboot suggestion but still no good. Strange that it’s perfect on my iPhone X. Think I’ll give up. Thanks for your help Rob

Have you 'checked' Offline Maps.. Click the map icon top right corner of screen, make sure Offline Maps -> EOTopo 2021 is "ticked".

Steve,

I have the same problem on my new iPad Air 4th gen.

I’m on the road ATM, the lag is a real problem, both on & offline. I’m in and out of phone service, so haven’t had a chance to find a solution. Please post if you come up with a fix, as will i, if I can work it out.

Hi Trevor
I’ve been playing around with mine and although it’s still very laggy, I find it worse when zoomed right out. I presume it’s because it’s rendering so much information. When zoomed in as long as you pan around reasonably slowly it manages to keep up. This seems a bit crazy as according to the iPad specs, it’s processor is supposed to be one of the best, marginally less efficient than the iPad Pro. I have the app on an iPhone X also and it runs well. No lag at all. I have noticed if you use it in offline mode it is slightly better but still lags more than I think it should.
I did do a complete re install of my iPad to factory setting but this made no difference so I’d suggest not doing that unless you want to spend hours reinstalling everything else on your iPad.
If I find a solution I’ll post it.
Enjoy the road. Hoping to get away at the end of the month myself for a few months.

I’ve had the same issue on my brand new Air 4 256gig. Unusable lag when zoomed well out to see several States on screen. Cannot scroll screen or respond to zoom changes. Have shutdown and restarted both app and iPad.
Leaving it running and very slowly zooming in and letting it ‘rest’ (catch up) between zooms it will eventually become responsive enough to zoom and scroll as quickly as I would expect.
Some room for improvement but overall delighted with features and detail. Hang in there I’m sure it will be resolved.

Hi Alan
Same iPad as me and same issues. I found if you don’t zoom out to far it is fairly responsive but sort of defeats the purpose if you want to view a large area. I agree with you regarding features and detail the app has, it could be a great app.

"regarding features and detail the app has, it could be a great app."

It IS a great app.

I have none of the issues iOS users have described on my Samsung Tab S6 with 6GB RAM.

But on lesser Samsung Android devices with perhaps more apps loaded, I do see similar issues. One of my tablets was my stand-by device for everything - email, banking, navigation, a couple of games for the grandies, a few tech apps that I like to play with, you name it. It was fine with Traveller and EOTopo 2019, but won't run Traveller and EOTopo 2021 the way I would like - it's too laggy, unacceptably so.

Traveller is not a small app. It is big and complex and requires some memory headroom and a decent processor that's not bogged down with crap that you may not be aware of, like apps running in the background that don't appear on the currently running apps list.

I think it is not about the app, it's about the device, whatever the OS, its specs and how much other crap is loaded on it. Apps running in the background load the device and consume RAM. Get rid of them.

I know nothing about what firmware comes with what Apple device, but is your firmware iOS11 or later?

If not, update, try a spring clean and see how you go.

"I run the app on an iPhone X too and it runs perfectly."

That would seem to point to an issue in the iPad, not the app.

It seems to be an iPadOS problem rather than IOS.

Does anyone have an iPad running IOS that is working OK?

I am and develop the app on an iPad 8th Gen as a primary test device for iOS and have several older iPads that we run the app on (plus simulators on the Mac Book). I am using the 14.4.2 release without issues and in my limited research on this problem so far I can see that the reports started on the exact same day as release 14.5.1 came out. So I am now updating my perfectly working iPad to 14.5.1 and will see what happens once it has completed.

But rest assured there are hundreds of working iPads out there. We have somewhere in the vicinity of 4K iOS users and on my last check it is a 50/50 split between iPhone and iPad so we should have around 2K iPads and at this stage about 5 or so reports of issues (understanding some people will not have opened it recently and not everyone reports etc etc). However this does not mean we are not looking into it and I will report once I have updated my primary test device.

I have just updated the iPad 8th Gen to 14.5.1 and there is no difference in it's operation so if there is something it seems relevant to the Air models as they run a different CPU. I currently do not have an Air unit in the office for testing. I will fire up some simulators today and see if I can see anything however I suspect I may need a physical unit for the next level of debugging.

OK iPad Air people,

I have just purchased an Air yesterday and been working on the performance. I believe I have found the issue related to road name labels at lower (0-10) zoom levels. So for those that have reported this please switch to EOTopo 2021 Online and test it now and let me know if the problem is gone. Of course the online will load a little slower than offline but the problem was obvious and I am sure you will see it is fixed. Anyway please report so that we can get this full fix out in 6.3.0 which is ready to go pending the result of this testing.

BTW: when you zoom out to say 4-6 you should not see the road name labels on the major roads - if you are still seeing this please let me know but you may need to clear the device cache.

Is there anything that can me done about performance on an Ipad Mini 4? Street and Satellite maps work fine, but the EOTopo is unusable.

Swamps,
The fix just applied should be the solution but currently online only, I need to release 6.3.0 to include the full fix for offline. Please try it when zoomed out you should NOT see black major road labels - you may see some red trek ones however. If you are seeing black roads then try close app, swipe away completely and restart it.
