Hi All. I am looking at travelling from Peth to Central Queensland via the
Great Central Road and the
Plenty Highway on the 10 October and would be interested to hear from any travellers who have travelled either of these 2 tracks recently and able to provide some current information on the road conditions.
I will be towing a camper trailer and have travelled both of these tracks in the past but would really appreciate some up to date information. Many thanks in advance. Noel G

Hi Noel
Have you done your homework and applied for your permits?
As far as I am aware, the
Great Central Road is closed due to COVID, along with many other great remote outback roads.

Thanks for your reply Stephen. I have applied for both permits with the NT permit being approved, Still waiting on a reply for the WA permit. There was no mention of the GCR being closed. Noel

When I did the Donahue/Plenty in mid June this year, the approx 80kms of gravel on Donahue was very good. The Plenty from border to Jervious, was dry, rough & bulldusty. From Jervious to Harts Range had received plenty of rain but otherwise would have been bulldust & bit rough. They were working on 2 sections East of
end of bitumen, so you could score an extra 10-15kms of black stuff by now.
Did GCR in July ‘19, and it varied from good to ordinary then, with graders on section East of Warakurna. Probably worst was East of Docker River.

Bob, you'd be plenty surprised (no pun intended) just east of Docker River now. Back in June there was about 50km of brand spanking new full highway grade seal, so new that it had no lines and a 60k speed limit posted. But WEST of Docker was atrocious (as usual) out to the SBJ turnoff. C'mon WA, pull your finger out.

Many thanks Bob. Sounds like the Plenty and the Donahue should not be to much of a problem. Still waiting on word back on the conditions of the GCR from a couple of the Roadhouses and the permit for the WA section. Noel
