Anyone travelled this route lately. We are towing a 24’ van. Just wondering what the road is like as haven’t travelled it. Winding? Road conditions, is it steep etc.

Apart from a few km climb, the Gwydir Highway is not steep or windy.
Over that few km you will climb 700m, there are a few 35km/hr hair pin bends
I don't know what you tow with, how heavy your van is and what experience you have to be able to describe it any better. Timber semis (jinkers) and Cattle Semi trailers travelit regularly
I find some people consider anything other than Highway 1 difficult.
I tow a 2.2T van up that
hill without any problems.
Of northern NSW Great Divide ascents, I rate Thunderbolts Way (between
Gloucester and
Walcha) the steepest and most taxing, followed by Port Stephens cutting, then Waterfall Way between
Bellingen and
Dorrigo, followed by The
Moonbi ranges, then dead heat between Bruxner and Gwydir Highway and finally the
Ebor -
Grafton road the easiest.
With many of the rivers in flood, I would
check which roads are open in the next week

H - been up there many times with a van which would weight in at some 2.8 ton buy I tow with a V8 toyota cab/chas
The trip is about 160 kms with the first 70 kms going either direction being fast.
The middle 20 kms is slow but should not cause a problem.
Most of that 20 kms I travel in 3rd gear going both ways and have to go back to second on a few 35kms bends.
you will find is very good to travel after all this rain is over.
