Hi All,

We will want to run our Nespresso machine at some point off this inverter, which typically draws around 1800 watts. As I understand it, the C rating is important for high current devices. Can anyone recommend a mid range battery that will assist?

We have the following setup

400 Watts of Solar (41 volt panels)
Enerdrive DCDC charger

I figured we'd need 200AH as we will power the espresso machine, some small lights (2 x LED strips), charge phones/tablets and also power a Quick Charger from Milwakuee

Thanks!

Why not buy 2 x 120 Itech and run in parallel. Will do the job no worries.

They will do it easy. Each battery is only pulling about 70 a/h max for a couple of minutes when using the espresso machine. Each battery is capable of a sustained usage pull of 150a/h .............. 270a/h for 5 minutes (each!). Mate has 2 of these and we use the espresso machine half a dozen times a day at least and batteries are fine. He has a 3000watt inverter .

I assume you are talking AMPS there, rather than Ahr?

Hi Kris,

We have 360 amp hours of lithium batteries in our van, an 1800 watt PSW inverter and a small Nespresso coffee machine.

When the coffee machine and the milk frother are running together, the inverter is pulling 160 amps from the batteries.

I don't think many AGM deep cycle house batteries would be happy with such a discharge, but am happy to take advice on that. There may well be some that can handle it but I don't know them.

Lithium is a better option, but expensive. But lithium is increasingly the general trend these days.

Some lithium batteries with a reasonably high capacity have a max discharge current limitation much less than 1 C, so be careful if you go that way. Do your research.

I bought my batteries from Ev-Power in WA. Their batteries are made from large cells that can handle the high discharge rates you need.

Kris,

Check out Lithium Battery Wholesalers on Facebook, good batteries with decent discharge ratings, good prices & good service.
I’ve got 2 of their 100Ah batteries, been in use over 12 months.

They do a few package deals too, but as you already have an inverter, these may not suit?

When buying any batteries including Lithium when running coffee machines or microwaves, pay attention to the max discharge current. Most of the AGM replacement style have low discharge currents and not suitable for what those appliances.

Kris K,

I have all Enerdrive on board my caravan, AC/DC, DC2DC chargers, 2000 watt inverter and 200 amp hour lithium Btec battery, with 400 watts fixed solar.

Enerdrive advised me to go with the 200 amp hour with the inverter. I was going to go with 2 x 100 a/hr batteries. They told me than in the event of one x 100a/hr faltering under a big load, both may fail.

I believe their advice and support, above some other so-called “experts”. Give them a call or they are on Facebook on their page responding very quickly.

I,d rather 2 batteries in a system than 1. If one fails then at least the chances are the other will get you out of trouble. Seen this many a time on the systems I have worked on. If your one and only battery fails...your up a creek without a paddle.
1 x 200 a/h enerdrive is $2700 2 x 120 Itechs for 20% more a/h is $1800 and have capacity for larger amp output. No brainer in my book.

I have a Renogy 100a/h as a spare camp battery. 2 years old and often used by other mates for their fridges or for when something is required away from camp (boat). Been very good and the ability to completely shut it down with an attached dongle is very handy. They also have a good reputation and others on various forums also sing their praises. Just ensure the specs match up with what amperage you want to pull. Same a s any battery. Cheers.

The limitations of discharge rate of Li batteries being talked about here are typically limitations of the battery management system employed, not of the battery itself.
Batteries and BMS's can be purchased seperately to get what you need for special applications.
