Dirk Hartog Island & Steep Point

I see there are no public treks available for Dirk Hartog Island. I'm heading up there early June so I'll record a track and share it.

I am trying to calculate how much fuel I will need as I've been let down by LRA on the supply of my long range fuel tank. Has anyone done the full DHI trip and can provide me with an estimate of km's travelled and fuel usage.

Thanks
Tony

HI Tony,
You are correct there is no "ExplorOz Trek" for Dirk Hartog Island (been trying to get there for years but with the booking systems we can't manage it as we're too impromptu) however please note that there are some publicly uploaded Track Logs from other travellers that have been there. Just pop over to the TRACK LOGS section of our website (use the site menu to Destinations, select Track Logs) or take This Link to Track Logs for Dirk Hartog, which I've prepared with the search terms "Dirk Hartog" for you. I found 3 Track Logs that have been uploaded by others with an "Open" status meaning if you have the Traveller app, you can click the button to "Add to Shared" and these files will then appear in your Track Log shared list to use in the app. Hope this helps.
Alternatively, you can post a comment on any of the Track Logs to contact the file owner who can possibly help answer your questions.

PS: we would gladly work with you to convert your Track Log to an ExplorOz Trek to provide in the system. Could you please contact me via the Help Desk and we can discuss the requirements for this. We can take anyone's Track Log to convert to public ExplorOz Treks provided the supplier of the Track Log is prepared to add the additional mandatory info we need. This is something we are very happy/keen to do with more users.

Gidday

Can't help with a trek note but on a 2017 trip to the island the return trip from to theOverlander roadhouse and back was 760km and I averaged around 13l/100km in a 2013 Prado.

I was based at the homestead on some volunteer work so it was mostly short local drives but made the trip to a few spots on the west coast and the top end. Allow a whole day for that.

The road to Steep Point is pretty good till you get past Useless Loop then after the climb up the hill it's not so bad. Just lower the tyres.

The tracks on the island are mostly slow going as they are narrow and twisting with some sandy sections but it's not dune after dune which is where the fuel use usually soars.

The beach at the ferry crossing is very soft.

Fascinating place. I stood next to the memorial at Cape Inscription and surveyed the rather bleak landscape and wondered if Dirk Hartog had landed somewhere else we might have ended up being Dutchmen.

Enjoy it

Fuel is available on DHI at the “Homestead “ but was at a cost of $3:30/litre, when we were there mid last year.
We run a 4.2 litre Nissan diesel Ute with PiggyBack slide-on camper and with a 50 litre purchase on the island came home with half full tanks, having done ‘every’ track we could find out from Useless Loop.
It is rough on vehicles but was the high lit of an 8 month trip through WA
Enjoy. Murray

Thanks Murray. I just checked online and the homestead is selling fuel at $4.40 per litre which is very expensive. I think I'll take extra with me in Jerry cans.

Hi Tony

I have a GPX file of our trip to DHI I could possibly email to you.

I also put this FB post together detailing fuel usage etc. We were in a Holden Trailblazer towing a Kimberley Kamper. We had to purchase additional fuel whilst on the island as I underestimated fuel usage.

I hope this helps.

Not sure if it helps? We covered around 400km on DHI over 4 days a couple of years ago. We only camped the last night at the homestead., the other 3 nights were in the NP at different spots.
It’s mostly slow going corrugated coastal scrub type tracks, with a few dunes here and there. Awesome place to visit.
