Rox,
I presume if you are enquiring about XD cards, you have an Olympus camera? I have just bought one myself, and bought 2 X 256Meg cards, one from JB Hi Fi, and one brand new on Ebay from a seller in Melbourne.
I am wary of ANYTHING coming in from overseas, as plenty of people purchase cameras, computer gear etc, then are surprised and angey at having to pay expensive shipping, then get slugged GST on top by customs or the courier company. Some parcels are labelled gift, which are "supposed" to get through the net, but I wouldn't trust it.
I have seen the card you described for cheaper than $299 in Australia, and I think if you shop around, look on Ebay etc from a seller with high feedback, you may get one. It might appear dearer than just doing the currency conversion as you have done, but I wouldn't be taking the risk of getting pinned for GST/Import taxes, as well as the little recourse available for any warranty claims on the card, albeit low chance of it being faulty.
Cheers
Chris

Try flashmemory.com.au or Dick Smith they quite often have specials which get the price down a bit.
Some of the online(in OZ) also have good prices on cards
