When navigating my system (on an iPad Air 4)keeps dropping out. Every couple of minutes it comes back online for a few seconds then goes off again. It’s bluetoothed to a gps unit on my dash which the app on my phone says is working and transmitting. I tried taking it out of its Ram cradle and it worked continuously for a while but has now reverted back to not functioning continuously. Any thoughts out there.

Have you tried setting it to offline maps? Sometimes odd things happen when the app tries to switch between on and offline maps.

And if that works, leave it on off-line maps (
EOTopo). There is no difference in resolution between on-line and off-line maps - they are identical. However Streets and Paths and Satellite are only available on-line.

Chris
Are you referring to the Bluetooth link from the GPS working intermittently? That’s a different story than online offline dropping out.

I agree TrevorDavid. It’s a Bluetooth issue. My original description probably was misleading.

Chris,
Not being an Apple user I may be off the mark, but ...
It seems you have an app on your phone monitoring the Bluetooth equipped GPS that is trying to Bluetooth (if that's a verb?) data to the tablet. So GPS trying to communicate via Bluetooth to two devices, tablet and phone. I wonder if that's the problem.
Can you install the monitoring app, if needed, onto your tablet so that there is only ever one device using the GPS's Bluetooth link.
Do you even need the monitoring app? Doesn't the GPS show up as a connected device in the tablet's list of Bluetooth connections?
I am aware that the tablet must be hotspotted to the phone to get the on-line functionality of Traveller (I assume we are talking about Traveller) but that is via wifi and nothing to do with the Bluetooth connection to the GPS.

Hi Frank
Travelling around the
Shark Bay Area so often out of range hence my delayed responses to all.
I have tried without the app but no difference. The app is also installed on the iPad so I have tried isolating the iPad from the phone. Still acting up.
The GPS device is a Dual XGPS160 (capable of 5 Bluetooth connections)so I don’t use the phone although I have tried to without success. Yes the device does show up as connected.

Hi Chris,
I have used navigation apps on iPads since 2014, initially on the original iPad Air and now on an iPad Pro.
Intermittent Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection problems can sometimes be fixed by changing settings.
1. Reset Network Settings
Settings
General
Reset
Reset Network Settings
Enter your passcode
Reset
This will delete all network settings and return them to factory defaults.
2. Turn off Low Data Mode
Connect to Wi-Fi
Settings
Wi-Fi
Tap on (i) for information
Turn off Low Data Mode
Low Data Mode helps apps on your iPad reduce their network use. This can affect the performance of data intensive apps like navigation apps.
3. Set Auto-Lock to Never
Settings
Display & Brightness
Auto-Lock
Never
You are not handling the iPad when it is in the Ram cradle. It is possible the iPad thinks it is not being used and automatically locks itself to conserve the battery. Auto-Lock settings are 2,5,10 and 15 minutes and Never.
Hope this helps,
John

Hi
John,
Have tried several other suggestions with no success but I believe you may have hit the nail on the head. I have followed your instructions and reset the network settings on the iPad and initially it looks promising as when I tried it Bluetoothed to my phone it behaved. I will
test it today on a 50k trip we are doing and see how it goes.
I appreciate your response and that of the others and hopefully I’ll have a smile on my face after the
test.
Cheers
