I'm looking at buying a 2006 jayco hawk. However the stove inside seems redundant without an extraction fan/range hood to get rid of steam and more importantly grease. Does anyone have some ideas for fan mods? Or if not a mod to make better use of the stove place if I rip it out. Cheers Matty.

I find most of the caravan range hoods to be mainly there for show. Most of them in that era of vans when the manufacturers installed them, they failed to provide a sufficient size of duct. With that lacking of ducting the fans simply stalled and did not blow much air through them, i.e. they simply did not work. I'm not sure if any of these camper trailers were ever fitted with range hoods. People seem to cope with that so I suggest you should not worry that your proposed Hawk does not have a range hood.

You are right Peter. When outfitting my new motorhome, the experienced cabinetmaker said "Range hoods?... nah they don't work". The one I preferred had a pair of decent fans but only a 25mm dia exhaust duct. I re-engineered it to use 75mm and it works a charm.
Sometimes I just don't understand product designers!

There is one range hood that does work - Dometic / Electrolux 12V Recessed Rangehood - It is engineered as a complete unit. The fan is a centrifugal unit and not the computer type. Its duct is 100 mm diameter which is much bigger than any of the other bodgy types. I ordered our last van with one, it is heaps better than any other I have seen.

Its a campervan not a caravan so these will not fit.

The best option is to add a fan to the roof vent - on my camper van the roof vent sits right above the kitchen area and a fan works fine but then I only cook inside in inclement weather.

My setup is exactly the same. I guess you could set up an extractor in the vent, but ditto, I only boil water and perhaps cook some vegetables inside.

Agree, personally I would not cook anything oily or greasy inside where canvas is concerned.

Even outside I'm reluctant to use the outside kitchen under the awning for instance for the same reason, I know a few that have purchased portable gas stoves and they use them for cooking greasy items away from the van.

Yep, frying under the canvas is a big no-no for us as well. Have just replaced our 20yr old 2 burner Companion for a new you-beaut model ........ still does the same thing.

Cheers
