Hi all
Hope you are all not tired of answering queries like this

I am looking at buying a current model Hilux sr and and a Coromal thrill seeker 19'6 tare 2278kg atm3200kg.

Is anyone comfortably using a set up like this or similar, would love to hear of real world experiences rather than the on line results I get just telling me the Hilux has a towing capacity of 3500kg
A landcruiser is out of my budget but may be able to settle for a soulseeker which is a bit lighter but not much Atm 3200kg Tare 2211kg

Cheers

Can't offer any hands on experience, but discussions often emphasise getting the actual tare after fitting out, rather than the claims in the brochure. On paper the payload is in excess of 900kg which gives scope to be well under the atm.

Thanks Warren

Would you be comfortable towing this van with your Pajero and how close do you think you would be to the atm(3200kg). I have never towed a van so any advice much appreciated

Cheers

Others have given a response, but no I wouldn't/can't legally tow more than 3t but realistically 2.5t is the limit. My wind up camper only has an atm of 1.6t and is lower than the Pajero so little buffeting from trucks and cross winds. It's also <60% of the GVM, so pretty easy to tow. As others have suggested you first need to do your sums, e.g. GCM, (loaded) towball mass (10%=320kg), GVM, available vehicle payload hitched, then the axle loadings. After you have figured what you can legally tow, there is what you should or can comfortably tow and lastly the true caravan tare as delivered with any options.

The GCM IS 5850 kgs.
If you load to maximum GVM and ATM it will be overloaded.

I wouldn't tow any more than 2500kg with any of the twin cabs and many suv,s. I have a low mileage Paj with heaps of upgrades and ecu remap. I tow 2200kg. It performs well but you still notice it could do with more power in the hills. I can also comfortably sit on 100kph (gps speed) on the highways thus allowing me to keep up with most traffic and not causing traffic build ups (unlike many dolts towing their mcmansions. Before you buy ANY van...ask for a current weighbridge docket!!!! The caravan industry is full of bullshite when it comes to actual weights on their vans. Choose wisely and ask yourself..do I really need a van this big? Have you looked at second hand Jurgens vans?

Gringo,

You might find the attached useful. I wrote it for members of the club I belong to after reading many examples of wrong information published by people who should know better, including sales folk at shows and articles by various authors in 4WD and caravanning magazines.

Hope it helps

Excellent work Frank.

One other thing that can catch people out with smaller, usually soft floor campers, is the registered weight in QLD at least.
Trailers less than 2 tonnes can have legal weights up to 2 tonnes but only be registeted up to 1020 kg, cost of rego doubles at that point and the rego plate goes from the small plate to a full sized one making it very easy to spot cheats.

Gringo,
I regularly tow a 1 tonne trailer in all sorts of conditions comfortably with a KUN26 hilux and it is comfortable.

I have towed a 2 tonne EWP and it was very different, I knew it was there and level of alertness required 110%, not a relaxing time at all and that was a lump of steel with a low cog and not at all affected by cross winds or bow waves.

3 plus tonnes behind a similar weight vehicle would be like you were sitting on the tip of a stock whip waiting for the right conditions for it to crack.
