Small camp chairs at Bunnings...

Just a heads up, Bunnings have those small, compact camp chairs (like Helinox) out for $29.90 at the moment (I was told they are a temporary special). Before condemning them as cheap and nasty, they look okay. We purchased two, very similar at a similar price, from Aldi just over a year ago and they have been excellent. We have used them on picnics, birdwatching walks and beach lunches, very handy at times and look to be lasting well. Hopefully these Bunnings ones will be similar. I purchased one for my son and one for the BIL.

Cheers,

Mark

Might be ok for a temporary quick seat, but for camping, as the most important item you use ( on par with the fridge ), it wouldn’t cut the mustard.
As with the fridge, never scrimp on quality or comfort.

Those little chairs - well the Helinox ones - I have sat in a couple of times. Nice design for those with minimal storage space but more suited to younger & fitter folk, not for ageing back sufferers like me. Better than a stool, but only just. If anyone gets the Bunnings ones, I’d be interested to hear how the quality compares to Helinox - just out of interest.

Still haven’t found any decent lightweight camp chairs with *good* lumbar support. I’d be willing to pay reasonable money for an aluminium framed chair which was ‘ergonomically’ designed with effective back support. Until then I’ll continue to use my OzTrail Cascade 5 Aluminium (Same as the steel framed version but much lighter) that we have had in regular use for over 6 years now.

I think you have just shown me what I'll replace my Oz Trail with when the time comes Alby. We've had (actually still have) the Coleman 'Stripey' chairs with the low back which are also comfy & supportive , but we stopped carrying them to save weight as they are steel.
Your ones would definitely fit the bill (unless some with built in lumbar support come along). Do yours have a bar underneath your thighs, or just the material?

There is no bar under the base Cuppa, the same chair is available in steel and aluminium. We opted for the latter to save weight

The comments here crack me up sometimes. I was suggesting some might be interested in these for casual use (picnics, walks, beach etc., as mentioned). Nowhere did I suggest they would be good for primary camping chairs.

As for "don't scrimp on comfort", the two we purchased (for about $30) from Aldi are holding up brilliantly and have been used numerous times. For casual use, lightweight options these are good value. If you don't have a need for such chairs, fine, stick to your larger chairs (as I do when camping with the vehicle)...

Cheers,
Mark

Apologies Mark for my part in taking the conversation away from what you intended. For my part any low chairs would be a bad choice whether for main camping use or just occasional use as you suggest sadly. I have no doubt they would be very handy for use as you describe for many folk & well worth you having alerted others to their availability.

Mark, thanks for the heads-up. I just bought two for those occasions when our creaking bones protest at the mere suggestion of sitting on the ground at a family picnic or on the beach. We gave them a trial run in the kitchen - they are great, but the benchtops are a bit high, LOL.

Cheers

360 x 130 x 100 in a zip up bag. 915 grams. They are aluminium - what you'd expect for 30 bucks. Carbon fibre would be lighter, but $$$$. All the frame bits are held together with internal elastic cord so once unpacked it almost assembles itself. Then just stretch the fabric over the 4 corners. The corner pockets that take all the strain look to be well made, reinforced and heavily stitched.

Bunnings do no questions asked refunds, so worth buying to examine and try, IMO.

Just one observation...... they may not go well on sand with those pointy little legs.

Allan, they are no good on soft ground or sand. I made up a couple of 4x1 pine slats to sit the chair on when in use. I have to use them almost all the time when camping.

After reading this thread I went looking for them when I was in the big green shed, at first I thought I had found the kids version and looked further for the adults ones.
You can’t afford for the legs to sink much into the ground, the chairs are already really low so it wouldn’t take much to still have your butt on the ground :)

I wouldn’t want one as a camp chair but I can see their value if looking for a compact lightweight option

I bought one from aldi, some months ago, so I could take it bicycle touring, and it works well for that, so bikepacking it would be okay too, but maybe a little heavy. I used to use a collapsing stool which I found quite good, but no back support. Now using it on the bike is okay, as it is used for less then an hour, so not great harm to your body then, but I did use it recently with the camper trailer for inside the camper, and I found long term sitting in it very uncomfortable. I was pretty sore after 5 days of being stuck inside the camper due to wet weather. So I suggest using them only for short use, maybe an hour, not really good for oldies like me, young ones, could find them comfortable.

I have a similair set of these (Red Roads) and while I agree they are not an everyday camping chair, they live in the back of my cruiser and are used on those occasions when I didn't think/forgot to bring a chair along... way better than sitting on the ground.

At $29 these Bunnings version are a bargain price and I wouldn't hesitate in buying a set for emergency use. They are light, take up little room and likely to last a lifetime, simply because they will not have a huge usage.

Knowing my luck, Bunnings will have sold out by now :(

Cheers
