Barkly Roadhouse closed indefinitely

My stock Ranger tank is 80 litres. With our caravan I wouldn't make that distance while cruising at 90 kph, especially with a headwind. Should I sit on 60 kph and annoy other road users?

My Dmax has a 72 lit tank, of which about 67 is considered useable, and when towing uses between 15 and 21 lhk depending on conditions. I would not consider it safe or reasonable to enter that part of Australia without 100 litres of fuel whilst the Barkly is out of order.

My last 3 crossings being 2019 Camoweal to 3 ways used 75.2lit, 2019 Tennant Creek to Camowea 90.4 lit and 2021Tennant Ceek to Camoweal 86.5 lit. All required a stop at the Barkly.

I just did a check on distances as it's not just the 3Ways to Camooweal distance. There's also that anyone travelling to or from either of those places via the Tablelands Hwy to the Heartbreak Hotel on the Carpentaria Hwy would have travel distances of either 557 or 645 Kms approximately.

We do Mt Isa to Borroloola run every year in a Ram towing a Bushtracker caravan, approximately 200L.

Coming from Three Ways the head wind can be massive, there are warning signs along the way regarding this, my 100 series would not make that distance towing , with the head wind , wind tends to be east to west ,every time I cross the Barkly

We crossed the Barkley Tablelands last year, but via the Rankin and Barkley Stock Routes which misses the roadhouse completely :)

The Tablelands are not the most scenic county in Oz, but I prefer looking at it from a non bitumen road. Always seems better for some reason. :)

No Phil D…one would think a smart person would have a jerry can or 2 with them if that’s all the klms they can get, but it’s up to you what you choose to do. It’s easy enough to carry a empty jerry can around and only fill it when you need to.

rumpig, I wrote about a STOCK Ranger tank because that's a common amount of fuel so many have as they rely on places like this to be available. I already have a bigger tank because from decades of experience I don't rely on availability so ensure I can get to the next one if needed.

This case is far more than just no fuel, it's that the whole roadhouse is out of action for fuel, accommodation, and food until further notice. That also means truckies don't have a food stop either. This place is also a bit of an entertainment location for the area's cattle stations and so effects more than just travellers.

As others have written here and elsewhere, headwinds across there can make a big difference. Personally, I've always topped up there regardless, or in earlier days at Barry Caves.

No need to explain the place, I have stayed there….people (not just travelers) just need to deal with the fact it’s not there for a while now and plan around that, as inconvenient as it is.

Perhaps, but nothing happens fast in the Territory and the current chaos in the supply chain and labour shortages won't help.

I wonder if they get their fuel back online quicker than LCOOL get their site restored?

Stephen no doubt this thread will continue debating unrelated points long after the roadhouse gets back on it’s feet. :)
