I have travelled it a number of times in the dry winter. Always a good run. Locals mostly do it in 2wd cars. Can be busy in footy season!

Hi Pete

It’s basically an easy, enjoyable drive. Permits are easy and free to get for both the WA and NT sides.

The only section that is serious, true low range 1st gear 4X4 is the short drive up to the top of the Sir Frederick Range……giant rock covered track with some the size as a small soccer balls……I can still hear and feel them striking the underside of the car….lol. If you were with a group, you will be scratching to get any more that 3 cars at the top….a very small tight area at the top where the stone cairn is.

Lots of history from the area and the other detour to see the Aboriginal art at Bungabiddy Rockhole.

Seasons Greetings.

Hi Pete, if the locals have ben burning it can look pretty bleak in areas. As said pretty easy going. The northern end has a few corrugations and the southern end is quite sandy and almost beach like (well it was a couple of years ago). Excellent camping, scenery and the waterholes at the southern end are well worth a stop at. There is a bore and hand pump about 2/3 down that produces excellent water. For fun count the amount of vehicle wrecks.

Planning on doing this track in early Sept 2023 with a few other friends/vehicles. Can anyone confirm if any of the bores/hand pumps are still working and location of them please?
Been reading a few conflicting comments about condition of them.
Cheers
Steve

We did it early June ‘18, and found one of the pumps working okay. Good water too. Never saw the other pump. Position of the pump is flagged on the attached map.

When we arrived at the pump there were a few vehicles taking up the real estate around the pump, so we drove SE and found a camp about 150M away from the pump.Good camp, with ample wood but no view, it’s quite scrubby.
