Hi team, i have been frustrated at how slow my current Lenovo tablet is when using it with the Traveller app.
I want to keep the tablet to 8" screen size so i can hold it comfortably when using as an e reader.
My current specs are 32Gb ROM & the CPU speed is 2GHz. I know the Ipad mini would fit the bill but prefer sticking with Android.
Thanks in advance.

Merry Xmas,
Adrian

Have a look at the Samsung range. If you want the best speed from your tablet just steer clear of the cheaper models. (That last bit applies to any manufacturers models.)

Thanks Peter but after 2 hours of research there seems to be no good spec Android 8" tabs available in Oz! The Samsung A7 Lite has 3Gb RAM but several reviews suggest they are sluggish in demanding scenarios which i expect mapping software with X High Resolution maps would be. The Active 3 seems a little more powerful with 4Gb RAM but really directed to a Construction type environment but may be my best bet unless i cross over to the IPad Mini.

I have the S6 Lite which is a 10" tablet and find it is comfortable to hold in one hand. But it seems that the Samsung Galaxy Tab Active 3 Wi-Fi would be the goer for you. If it is being used in a vehicle on the run the ruggedness could be an advantage for you.

I have a Samsung a7 lite, is a bit slow on start up but does the job. It is a 4gb model I got online.
Dedicated for the traveller app so has minimal else installed.
Cheers

Thanks but a bit slow on start up is too similar to what I currently have as I'm keen for a step change. I also will load it up with a fair few other apps so was keen on more power but little exists in this 8" size unless you go to the dark side and get an IPad mini.
Thanks for the feedback.

That depends on what Bricky meant by start-up. Like Nomadic Navara I have the S6 lite. Previously I had a Lenovo A8. Compared with my phone, the S6 lite could be called slow if you mean start from a full power off state, but not from a sleep state. Unlike the Lenovo it is frugal with the battery and you can just put it to sleep when you stop for a break and all you need to do is wake it up with the power button and put in the lock code. There are no issues keeping the charge up unlike the Lenovo which was a constant battle. Like you I searched for a 7" Android tablet, they don't exist in Australia.

A Samsung A7 lite will perform much better than Levonos which have cheap processors.

If an A7 struggles, almost very tablet will struggle.

Appreciate the insight guys. If i can find an A7 Lite with 4GB of RAM or an Active 3 at a good price i may try that unless a few others confirm they are too sluggish with the latest version of the Traveller App & X high resolution maps.

For anyone who stumbles across this post the following is what ExplorOz have already posted on this site:

What is the Best Device to Use?
Traveller is not a “light app” so you should avoid using "budget" model devices that are only designed for general everyday use. The mapping engine and GPS tracking features require a lot of processing power and is not suitable for use on low spec tablets and the larger the screen the more important these issues become. When selecting a tablet, you should select a high-end model to ensure you have the best quality hardware as CPU and GPU processors are inferior in the "budget" models.

Samsung for example, offer an entry level range of "Budget" tablets in the Tab A series. The older versions of these tablets (prior to the Tab A7) were not designed for apps that require complex background processing and should be avoided due to poor performance. These older Tab A devices (eg. were only designed for people that wish to use the device for everyday functions - such as web browsing, watching videos, YouTube, Facebook, playing games and other light apps. The Tab A7 2021 series however was the first Tab A to have increased RAM and storage options, and faster CPU so Tab A7 and the latest generation Tab A8 (2022) are the only Samsung Tab A tablets that we would recommend if you are expecting good performance. On the other hand, the Samsung Tab S series is better suited than the Tab A series overall. Models such as the Tab S6, Tab S7, and latest Tab S8 are all very good choices.

None of these issues apply when buying a new Apple device. Apple iPads (Air, Pro) have good hardware and don't have a "budget" line of devices. The iPad Pro is the most powerful in the iPad line-up so is the best choice. Older model iPad mini's (2,3,4,5)should be avoided due to slower CPUs but the latest iPad mini 6 is a great choice if you want something smaller. The quality of the hardware inside your device will have a very big effect on your satisfaction with the user experience due to more powerful processor and faster speed.

For those still interested in selecting a tablet, have a look at the current issue of the APC magazine. It's been in the newsagents for a few days. It has a reasonably good review of a wide range of tablets (commencing P64.)

It also has a couple of other articles you may like - "Don't get tracked online in 3023" and "Best free downloads 2023."
