Hi All
new to the site and appreciating the wealth of knowledge and information here.
We are planning a trip from Sunshine Coast to SA and
home via Lake Eyre,
Oodnadatta & Simpson in July this year. Did Gulf & NT and the French line in 2021 and can't wait to get back out there again. 2018 BT50 dual cab with alloy canopy and rooftop tent.
We want to get down to Eyre Peninsula and have a look at Whalers Way and would like to know if it is possible to get from Red Banks to
Coffin Bay via the coastline, or do you have to come back up onto the main roads ?
Looks like a lot of tracks to access the wind turbines but I assume they would be restricted access ?
Thanks
Rolla

You need a key to get into Whalers Way and it needs to be returned to the
Port Lincoln Visitors Centre.

Thanks for the reply Michael. If I was able to get the key back with someone else, do you know if it is possible to continue on via those tracks ?

The place is fully locked up hence the need for a key. I can't imagine there would be a way out along the coast.

As stated, you need to pick the key up and return to the
Port Lincoln Visitor Information Centre to get your deposit back, and it is a one way drive through Whalers Way and you must return the way you come in.

.
Hey Stephen, you've got me confused. If it's a "one way drive", how can you return "the way you come in"?
Wait a minute, I think I know….. You back out, right? lol

Sorry for the confusion, there is only 1 road in and out and you detour to the various other
places in Whalers Way, but no way of following the coast around any further to
Coffin Bay, which is really not that far from
Port Lincoln anyway.

All good advice. The direct answer to your question is no. The coastline there is incredibly challenging given there’s no beaches as the cliffs come all the way to the water to start with. Also heaps of private property which you cannot cross. Have a play in the Sleaford dunes if you’re looking for some sand driving. If you’re contemplating heading into the
Coffin Bay NP be very
well prepared for self recovery. & take particular note of the tides.

Rolla if you have the time I suggest a day trip into the Lincoln NP exploall the coves out as far as Memory Cove & return. This also needs a key from the Lincoln VIC. If you’re lucky you will see pods of dolphins surfing the swell chasing fish into some of the coves. It’s a very special place.

Hi Rolla
All that has been said is good, but to be clear about the Sleaford dunes, there is a very scenic drive along the coast on the Sleaford - Wanna Track. You will easily find this on your map. It is a 4wd track, but not a serious challenge and you would be very unlucky to get bogged in the sandhills. The scenery is possibly better if travelling the track east to west. There is a
lookout at Wanna overlooking Wedding Cake Island - you will understand the name when you see it.
You could save the rest of your off-roading skills for
Coffin Bay NP where there are many challenges on the beaches!
If spending some time in the Coffin Bay/Lincoln area, you can get a pass to cover your NP entry fee for the period from the Nat Parks Office in
Port Lincoln.
