Is it possible to add gas struts to a hard floor camper, to assist with the opening of it.
I have a little old Aussie hard floor, she’s getting hard for me to open alone. Can I put gas struts on her to help me?
If I can, I’d there anything I need to be aware of?

yes but you will have to ensure that they dont restrict movement
have a look at other campers to see where they have placed theirs.

Yes you can.
This might be useful?

Alternatively, you could consider 12v linear actuators.

I think it’s a 1997 Aussie swag. Just a basic camper, no kitchen or anything
I’m in WA in the Pilbara.

Howdy

I have a 2006 Campomatic rear fold which I purchased a couple years ago that came standard with struts to assist opening and closing. Opening the camper was easy but closing was far more difficult on my own so I looked into replacing the struts which I figured were out of gas / worn out.

Contacted gas struts australia who got me to weigh the tent part when opened and almost closed so they could make new struts suitable for the weight. Fitted the new struts when they came and opening was now a one handed operation but closing was still difficult on my own so I fitted a small electric winch with remote controller which makes everything setting / packing up so much easier.

As you don't have struts already they will need to be fitted so a good metal fabricator, mechanic, trailer mob etc should be able to do that easily. The ball studs will need to be securely fixed to the trailer in the correct position with a threaded plate bolted on the outside the easiest option. Some pics of your trailer in the open and closed position along with some weights and some measurements sent to a reputable strut mob will help with what struts are required. Then it's just a matter of getting them fitted.

Also - a hand winch at the front will help with closing but would need a bit of ingenuity and some sort of tallish pole at the front to help with opening or a temporary removeable pole at the back somehow where you could attach the winch to help open - just need to get the grey matter working on some ideas !!

Good luck

Cheers
Gazz
