Looking for opinions on this way to the Corner. Hope to be in Birdsville late Sept./early Oct. this year. have 2013 Mazda BT-50 auto but gearchange problems rule out a direct shot from Birdsville over the dunes. 80-litre tank, will carry extra 50 litres, 2 spare tyres, the usual extras. Is it an easier drive running "parallel" to the dunes along K1 or not much difference? I realise that Warburton Creek can be dodgy or even no-go, depending on weather, etc. I was also looking at driving down to Mungeranie and filling up before trying as it is approx. 100 kms. closer to the Corner than from Birdsville. Sound reasonable or over-worry? By the way, towing nothing. Will be tenting. Cheers for any suggestions.

Hi Stephen,

No matter which road you take, in order to reach Poeppels corner, you will be travelling over some dunes. If your vehicle is “not up to it”, I would strongly recommend that you do not attempt it. If you have to be “rescued” by the big MAN from Birdsville, it will be a very costly exercise, not to mention the potential of being stranded for possibly a couple of days.

Do you have some sort of remote communication capability? Can you carry enough food but more importantly water for a few days in case your vehicle becomes disabled?

You really need to seriously think about whether you should be doing this trip, or get your vehicle repaired before doing the trip.

You have to wonder about a few of these closures .... some of them never reach "further notice" and get reopened (Walkers Crossing being a prime example) :-(

Apparently it has been closed because too many people were getting lost so there is a stand-off between the Pastoral Board and Parks, Pastoral Board want Parks to install signage so as to stop people getting lost.

Thanks for comments thus far. Will check on road conditions closer to planned schedule, of course, but---if lucky, for once---the "Lucky Numbers" might get me a new BT 50. :) In the interim, will keep planning. Do have 80 litres of water for car and me. Thanks again.
