I have a 3.4l petrol Prado and am very happy with it. The next vehicle I buy will also be a Prado and my only decision is whether to stay petrol or go diesel. I'd only go diesel for fuel economy as having test driven a diesel they lack the power of the petrol. Just wondering if anyone has accurate figures for a diesel. I'm going to wait for the new model but I imagine current model figures would be comparable. thanks in advance.

A friend of mine has just bought a TD Prado. I asked him and his comments are below. This car has only just completed 10000 km's of which 5000 was Gibb River Rd/Kalumburu so consumption would have been heavier because of heavy load and tight motor. His comment is as follows:
I am generally getting a bit better than 13 litres per hundred Ks. That is including the Gibb etc. For the 159 litres that should get me 1223 K's. I have a mate in town that has the same model, colour the lot and he reckons that he is getting between 1300 to 1350 k's.

cheers

Thanks for that Allyn .... sounds like what I'm after! I get 12.5-13 on the highway but it goes up off road (Oodnadatta to Birdsville via the Simpson Desert was 16.8). Seems that your friends is significantly better than that. Thanks again

I forgot to mention we live in Pilbara so figures are with air-con on 24/7

Mike
Have a 2001 prado TD manual with 15000kms on the clock. Without a load I get 24mpg and with a load(2000kg van) 21.5 mpg have noticed that the economy is still improving as the motor is still tight

Thanks Dazmit and Jaap - sounds like the big gains are around town and when towing and off road. Without a load i can go around 24mpg but even with a 1500kg van I'm well below 21mpg more like 16 - 17mpg. Thanks again.

I have the late model Surf with the 3 lt. turbo intercooled diesel with auto.I get 10 lts per 100 km. on the road and about 12 loaded and outback. I have larger 275.16 tyres fitted and the turbo boost increased a bit. The motor is the same as the prado but I don't think the Prado is inter cooled. This gives you about 10-15 more HP.
Cheers
