Something I really want to do again. Any idea on how expensive it is to get a vehicle across to Tassie and back?

If towing not much change out of $2000 . The spirit of Tasmania is expensive.

That is very easy to find out. Go to the booking page on their website and commence booking a passage for the time you would like to travel. Go through the motions up to the point where they ask for your credit care - then crash out of the booking. You will then have an accurate figure for your rig. If you are towing they require you to have the length of your van measured from the tow coupling to the back of the spare tyre. When I last booked they ask you for the exact model designation of your tug, they know the length of most vehicles and add the length of your van to that to get your total length.

Thanks everyone for their replies. Last time I went (mid 90’s) we hired a car, but if I go again, I’ll try and get my Hilux across instead. Damned expensive though.

Judy and I have been over there 3 times now and still not seen everything we want. The last time we went over was when they had a $99- special on ( shoulder season) each way plus a cabin fee for the night.
It was expensive back then to load a caravan on (as stated about $2000-) as you are over height and length, thus placed in the truck bays.
Just watch out for their specials that come out a couple a times a year.

Which year was that? Last time I went over they no longer included a shoulder season in their schedule.

Hi Nomadic Narvara, yep the last time I went over was just prior covid, about 3 years now. The point I was trying to make was watch out for their specials that come put normally around shoulder season.
It must be about time I go again, just waiting from a report from my brother who is currently over there touring
places I missed.
You cannot go there and miss the Whiskey Distillerys, they make pretty god whiskey

It's a great walk/climb on foot as
well. Our only disappointment was NO CAFE !!?? at the top.
Not sure if that's still the case.
Cheers

Price isn't the issue - it's getting a booking that's the issue - I just tried the online booking system a few days ago but first available booking is end of February.. and then no return availability until July!!! So that's out of the question :( That's for bookings for vehicle + camper trailer/caravan. Our length is 10.6m.
Price
breakdown is shown on the booking for each leg:
Outbound journey for the February: 2 adults $216 + 1 car with caravan $565
Return journey for the July: 2 adults $138 +1 car with caravan/camper trailer $479
So different rates at different times of year.
These prices are quoted without cabin etc. We've done it before with a cabin (with 2
young kids was awful, very cramped and no one slept, we felt every rock/roll of the boat), also done it in the recliner (fine), and also done it free roaming (best) as there is plenty of public seating available and entertainment etc. You don't need to book anything if taking a day time booking.
