Wanjarri Nature Reserve

Where is Winjarri? It's not on the EO or Google Maps.

It’s north of Kalgoorlie. It was a station owned by Tom Moriarty - Uncle Tom. I remember staying there as a kid. All I can remember is the Uncle Tom snored very loudly and scared me. I also remember being surrounded by red back spiders that had set up home in the corrugations in the tin - my bed was set up in one of the wool bins. I also remember birds and trees, it was beautiful. That’s why Uncle Tom wanted it to become a reserve.

These directions dated May 21 I have taken from another site and were after mining had started. As you are aware there are ongoing mining operations in the area so things may have changed.

Travelling north from Leinster turn right at approximately 58klm from Leinster turn off. Turn off says Mine Site. Ignore " No Entry" signs. Proceed a couple of klm to clearing where hand painted sign to nature reserve directs you right. More klms to Y junction. Follow broken sign directing to the left. Continue on this road for several klms to the woodshed. Collect wood on the way.

As you have plenty of time I would suggest you contact DBCA Kalgoorlie, the Nature Reserve comes under their jurisdiction to get an update.

There is some nice breakaways out towards the back of the Reserve and probably due to the mining you have mobile reception. It was setup nicely as they had birdwatchers out there. The visitors book had some interesting comments and history of the place. The tracks on the Reserve were all good but that was several years ago.

Yes, I apologise for my miss spell. My understanding is that Wanjarri is the correct spelling.
