I travelled from
Brisbane to
Birdsville (late May) via
Roma..
check out the wines at Romaville winery next to the Caravan Park...
Charleville,
Quilpie,
Windorah. Three days easy drive. Unsealed last 265k, but a good outback road nevertheless.

Irene, we travelled from the Sunshine Coast to
Birdsville and beyond a few weeks ago towing an off-road trailer. The road to
Quilpie is fine - easy travelling. The road from
Quilpie to
Windorah is narrow but as long as you slow down when passing there should be no problems. The Council Caravan Park at
Windorah is great at $5 a night - just pull in and choose a site (the money is collected in the morning by a chap who loves a chat!). From
Windorah there is about 100k of narrow bitumen before you hit the dirt. The road is rocky but very wide - we sat on 100k most of the way. The scenery is fantastic. We did not meet many vehicles on the road to
Birdsville but just slow down when passing.
Birdsville is
well worth a couple of days at least - even if you are not crossing the Simpson go out and have a look at Big Red (40k). When you get to the base of it turn right and follow the track for about 1 k this is the real Big Red. We walked up and took piccies. You'll love it!

Irene, we did the
Birdsville Track to
Marree,it was a great drive no real problems. We stopped at Mungerannie for the night - camped beside a fabulous
waterhole - and had dinner at the roadhouse. It was a fun night and met lots of locals. It was a far better option than driving a full day and staying in
Marree. We headed out to Lake Eyre from
Marree and then up the
Oodnadatta track so can't help you with the rest.
