Just a general question.

Who uses multiple apps to Plot/Plan Travel ?

Get the best of both or more worlds. :-)

Hi Mark B68,

I use a combination of Google Maps, and the Hema Road and 4WD Atlas (Spiral bound book) to plan my trips on my desktop computer. I have started to use the Exploroz Traveller app as well. The only reason for not using Exploroz Traveller all the time, is that my iPad is a WiFi only, and not WiFi + Cellular, so I cannot use the iPad as a stand alone navigator as Cellphone signal is too hit and miss when traveling , and the phone screen is too small. I also have a Hema HX2 as an “in car” navigator. My OEM in car head unit does not support either Apple or Android Car Play.

I have experimented with using a Bad Elf “plug in” external GPS with the iPad, which does work, but the iPad battery does not last long enough to be efficient, and you cannot plug both the Bad Elf and the external lightening charging cable into the iPad at the same time.

Does the HEMA device use the same Etoppo maps ?

We have the CAMPS 12 Spiral bound book as well... Good to browse and plan at the table.

Looks like you can do pass through charging if your iPad uses a usb c port, otherwise a Bluetooth gps.

Mark B68,

I do not believe so.

Warren H,

The iPad uses a USB-B cable/port, so will not allow “pass through” charging, I already tried that, but thanks for the suggestion.

I might also add here that whilst I like to plan my trips using maps etc. unless we have a specific need to be in a particular place at a particular time, we do not stick to a specific schedule. Planning using maps gives me a general idea where I might be at a particular time or day on the trip. We do quite often deviate from the plan, and then adjust as necessary.

I often use Google My Maps to sketch out a big trip. It has layers and more way points than plain google maps. For a detailed plan I would then go to EOT. You can export My Maps to a gpx file and load into EOT as well.

I often use mapout to plan a trip, it is so much simpler than traveller (just run your finger over the map or tap) but the main reason is that it has really great 3d perspective so you can plan a really interesting route, available on the appstore

When I start the motor I like to follow the assumption that if I don't know where I'm going any road will get me there.

We give heavy preference to any road we have not used previously.
But we do not plan with any detail. We would not have a clue where we might spend the second night, for instance.

To each his own of course, but from home we generally pointed the Troopy in a somewhat westerly direction and drove. Made it up as we went along. Only time we planned routes was when we needed to be somewhere at a certain time and even then just nominated waypoints to be sure we did not fall behind. We enjoyed many pleasant surprises that way.
And we do not like maps (paper or digital) that are adorned with "Places of Interest" and other information. If we missed anything then we were never aware of it so it didn't matter anyway. Ahhh, the carefree life.
So sorry David & Michelle, Traveller is not for us.
Cheers
Allan

I use a sense of direction. Seems to work ok so far. If in unfamiliar country I might then turn on a NAVIGATING system to look see where I am and possibly where to head to next. This driving along trying to look at a screen instead of the road is not for me. Use a map too if daylight. My vehicle has brakes and so can stop sometimes and turn ON and check a nav system if required.

With a basic GPS at around 10pm in high country I turned it ON and then took a turn to a hut I had never been to before. Turn was around 150m from where it indicated but ok. Just how many turn offs are where you want to go? I would NEVER see any point in having a head unit in a vehicle changed to something different. Just totally unwarranted for me!
I sort of know if driving for a while, that 50km away turn off, will be getting closer and so look out for it. Unless you have covered the distance looking at a map screen constantly is useless.

Having been in the ARMY don't you have an ability to know where you are and then find it? And with the IT experience you mentioned it would be very simple for you to use any map program to suit your needs! Are you devoid of these skills?

As we drive along, I find the info on a topographic map interesting and often ask the navigator what the name of a feature is. Mostly I have a good look at the planned route for the day and tootle off as it were. If I was going to be away for 6+ months I'd be more of a happy wanderer rather than a planner. Each to their own method of discovering the places and meeting the people.

Looking at the comments I think that some may be missing the point a little. It isn't a one size fits all scenario and everyone has their preferred way of travelling. EOT and other navigation aids are handy to look at where you are, what options might be ahead of you to explore and what type of terrain you are heading into. At the end of the day, it is just data on which you make choices. You can also choose to use as little or as much. I like the ability to re route when I come across a section of road/track that is impassable for some reason and I have to plan an alternative. I personally don't need to be glued to a nav screen and I'm happy just wandering in the general direction. I do like the ability to track where I have been and make a note of something significant or potentially great campsite that I might wish to come back to. Wiki camps is handy when you looking for spots in an area that you've never been to especially if you would like to free camp. At the end of the day, it is all just data to make use of based on your needs.
