How can I reduce memory ExploreOz is taking up on my iPad as I am running out of space?

The maps make up the bulk of the space . Are you using the current version and new maps? The previous version maps might still be there taking up space. Try deleting app and reinstalling

Maybe dump some other stuff you don't use much. Photos and the like can be put on a USB stick.

Thanks mate, tried that exercise already ,but still short of memory to update. iPad does not havev USB ports. Also it’s non cellular so SIM idea won’t work. Guess it’s time to buy another or forget updating.

Cheers

You just need an adaptor to go from the Apple port to a regular usb or a cable with the Apple plug that goes to the external device.

Most of latest IPads are fitted with a USB “C” port, so transferring data is much easier.

Quote "iPad does not havev USB ports."
But does its Lightning connector connect to peripheral memory? Have a look at this one -
SanDisk iXpand Lightning and USB Type-C Flash Drive (128GB) - There are many other USB drives with Lightning connectors, but I selected that one as it will also allow you to connect it with future new generation equipment that you may purchase.
More of the same thing - you should already have something like this to backup your iPad.

Load the maps onto a SIM card...assumming you can put a sim into an ipad. Store on there instead of the pads internal memory.

Bigfish, I presume you mean a microsd card? I believe that with an iPad you're stuck with internal memory as purchased. You can add an external drive but I don't know if it's storage only or you can configure apps to use the drive, as opposed to say storing photos say that you can then load into an app for processing.

.
There is a lot of expressions of "memory" here when I think "storage" is meant. There is a difference and the distinction is important.
I think Andrew is really concerned with storage rather than memory (RAM) and the distinction is vital when looking at device specifications, especially when assessing a product for purchase.

Correct Allan. Thanks for clarifying. Storage is my real issue as whilst the iPad still functions
well enough to run ExploreOz, there is not enough storage left to do an update. It’s only a 64 gig version so not unexpected. However, whilst fully aware a new model would solve this issue, it seems a waste to spend $1200 or so on a new one without investigating if anything can be done ( besides photos, apps etc) to release more storage.

,
Hi Andrew,
Peter's (Nomadic Navara) proposal above for a Flash Drive with Apple Lighting connection may solve the problem economically.
Although bear in mind that if your current iPad does not have SIM & internal GPS receiver you will not be able to utilise some of Traveller's features.
If you do upgrade your tablet it may be sufficient for you to choose other than iPad. Samsung (my choice) make excellent tablets with internal GPS and plenty of storage at much cheaper than iPad. Add a SIM card and a data plan and you will have the benefit of internet access and email etc.
