Sadly with the demise of the telsta siebel billing system this month the days of accessing iridium satellite calls via a telstra sim with global roaming activated are no more.
The transition to the console system means no more swapping sims to access satellite communication cheaply. Your iridium phone will still work sim free to emergency
services via 112. Sms and non emergency calls are no longer available..
I wonder how many lives have been saved because travellers had cheap access to satellite comms?
Personally I can't wait for samsung to catch up to Apple's life saving technology.

Apple's Emergency SOS via satellite allows you to text emergency
services when you don't have mobile or Wi-Fi connection. This feature is available on iPhone 14 and later models with iOS 18.

Interesting, Nick.
Now we wait for Telstra and Optus to offer the same service.

While the Samsung Galaxy S25 does have satellite connectivity capabilities, it is currently not accessible to users in Australia. Only Verizon customers in the US can currently access satellite messaging on the S25. Also for iPhone users, Globarstar plans to upgrade there satellite numbers which I hope will be past onto Spot satellite message tracking devices as these devices a much more robust, waterproof and have longer operating times than smartphones.

Thanks Nick I was hoping my s24 ultra would have it but alas no. There has been no fanfare about this. Maybe samsung are embarrassed about playing catch up.
Cheers mark

Looks like the days of satelite phones have ran their course, unable to compete economically with their competitors, in Australia anyway.
Thuraya s just not bothered about losing our trade. If it was worth their while they would have had a new satellite up in weeks after the failure.
As with almost everything else, our market on comparison to the rest of the world just isn't worth the effort.
