Hi folks, just musing upon our route northwards this year - will be around Broken Hill at the end of March & thinking about continuing on up to Tiboooburra to Warri Gate & on to Nockatunga in early April.

We are familiar with the roads east., west & south of Tibooburra, but haven't been up to Nockatunga before.

Can anyone tell me what to expect of the road from Tibooburra to Nockatunga?

From there the loose intention would be to head onward to Boulia. (& then across the Plenty Hwy & up the northern section of the Binns track/Frew River Rd via the Davenport Ranges).

Not sure which way to Boulia from Nockatunga yet, but I think all options will be retracing previously driven routes. However if there is a chance of seeing Pelicans 'en masse' at Lake Machattie south of Bedourie we'll likely go that way.

We'll have plenty of time - our 'midway ' destination is the Barunga festival first week in June. (South east of Katherine). The longer term destination is Mt Elizabeth Station on the Gibb River Road where we will be caretaking from October for the 25/26 wet season.

Somewhere in that time frame (June to September) we would like to explore the Victoria River area, instead of just passing through it as we have previously done several times - any recommendations for camp spots/routes in that region away from the highway? ( Have previously been south/north through the Gregory NP)

Have friends to visit in Kununurra & will likely spend a few weeks around that area in July (including revisiting Cape Domett) & I reckon a re-visit to Keep River NP will be in order (we were in our 2wd bus last time we went there).

Will likely try to take in the Freedom Day festival in late August at Kalkarindji if we can. Haven't been on the Buchanan Hwy down via Jasper Gorge before.

If anyone has recommendations for routes, tracks, waterholes, camp spots etc which might fit this very loose itinerary I love to hear them .

Last time we drove Warrie Gate to Nockatunga (a long time ago) it was a very good road.
Have you driven the (now closed) Munja Track to Walcott Inlet?
Do some volunteering at Keep River NP to get access to other spots there and maybe Gregory NP too.
Cheers,
Peter

Yes Peter, we went down to Walcott inlet in 2019. I think that may have been the last year it was open. It is still possible to drive the first 60kms of the track from Mt Elizabeth. I'm not sure, but we are hoping that the 60kms may be enough to get us to the rocky outcrops (see pic) where there was a fair bit of rock art, caves & other interesting stuff. Pity we cant go further, Bachsten, Wren Gorge & Walcott are up there with the best from all our previous travels.

I imagine exploring on the station tracks may well bring up other interesting areas that tourists don't generally see as well as the gorges we'll have to ourselves.

I drove this road in August last year. It had only recently reopened after rain, and it was pretty awful from Noccundra to Warri Gate - they were doing reairs and there were lots of very sandy detours. From Warri gate to Tibooburra is all sealed.
