Currently planning a trip to
Flinders Ranges. We are going to base at Parachilna a few days then we want to go to
Leigh Creek and on to
Cameron Corner via the
Strzelecki Track, Merty Merty and Riecks Road. Sadly the SA Gov site map legend says you must have 4WD, be under 3.5T and no towing. However if you click on the road it says 4WD is the only restriction. I went to their hotline which is recorded and it also only states 4WD as the only requirement. Looking at youtube the road appears suitable (when dry) and the weather should be dry while we are there. We are 4.2T in the car (Y62) and 3.5T in the offroad van.
Can anyone clarify this for us, we don't want to have to drive down to
Peterborough then
Broken Hill to get to
Cameron Corner.

I expect you are looking at
SA Outback Roads
That website displays the current condition and restrictions of outback roads which MUST be complied with.
Those restrictions can change daily as conditions change.
I expect that the restrictions on Rieks Road are due to recent local rain.
Keep your fingers crossed. It is generally a great drive.

West of Cameron Corner.

Peter

Thanks for the advice Peter. I am doing my research trying to ensure I comply with the website, and that is the problem - the website contradicts itself.
Map Legend - yellow line is 4WD, under 3.5T and no Towing
Map yellow line (click on it) 4WD is the only restriction
SA Gov Helpline - 4WD is the only restriction
I could easily argue that two methods say 4WD only but I suspect that is wrong. I'll try their number again next week.

We did this trip three times over last year and the road is in very poor condition even after Bollards did a heap of work. The dunes have lost most of the capping and is very rutted . It was very bad in a 4x4 but would be borderline dangerous towing. This is not seasonal or weather related it is damage to the road that hasn't been repaired.

Good info, thank you. They plan to grade it in April but that is a bit too late for us unfortunately.

Bollards do most of the maintenance and they get paid bugger all and it never last long after they do it. Last year was a very wet year so it will depend on how this years weather turns out, The ruts on the dunes were deep enough to bottom a van out.

Another way to go could be up to Innaminka, across to Santos and down to Cameron's Corner

That could be viable if it is not too wet.
We went that way in company with a 23ft van in 2016.

EDIT 1: I reckon we went direct between Omicron and Epsilon and bypassed Santos.
EDIT 2. This link might also be useful to gauge the extent of recent local rain.
