I saw this on an American landcuiser site and thought I would add it as a reminder to use and maintain
winches safely.
Its hard to imagine the pent up forces in steel rope cable during a difficult recovery but they do exist!

Ross, it is a reminder to stand back away from not just
winches but snatch straps too and use a damper - particularly on a winch cable. The winch cable can whip anywhere.
I broke a ten tonne snatch strap two weeks back trying to recover a tractor. You don't do it the same the second time.....

Very unfortunate incident. Lucky it wasn't three feet higher or it would have taken his head off.
Yesterday during some winching activity I always got further away from the cable, than the length of the cable itself, or got behind a tree. Even though it was a relatively new cable it had been kinked which must produce some weak points.
They're bloody dangerous and must be treated with respect.
Jim.
